Book Description

August 1999
"Low biological activity is inherent in each weed problem ... Each weed is keyed to a specific environment slotted for its proliferation." So says Weeds — Control Without Poisons author Charles Walters. Further, calcium, magnesium, potassium and other elements in equilibrium are likely to roll back more weeds than all the available herbicides on the market.

Specifics on a hundred weeds, why they grow, what soil conditions spur them on or stop them, what they say about your soil, and how to control them without the obscene presence of poisons. All cross-referenced by scientific and various common names, and a pictorial glossary.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing July 30, 2007
I was really excited when I first started to read this book. The first few chapters are great -- there is a lot of detail about what situations cause what weeds. However, most of the rest of the book deals with the evils of 2-4, D, chemical company conspiracies, and other rhetoric. I feel that the title is a bit misleading . . . very little reference to actually getting rid of the weeds. There is a nice compedium of weeds in the back--which might be useful if you don't already have one (I do.)Overall, I think this book focuses too much on the author's ideals and too little actual what we can do to improve our situation. Not to mention it contradicts other ACRES publications (ex. Hands On Agronomy is a proponet of deep tillage but WCWP is against.) I am still looking for a practical organic weed control manual if anyone has any suggestions.

1.0 out of 5 stars weeds:control without poisons July 13, 2006
I had my weeds identified at the local Ag office and only 1 was in the book and Mr Walters never said how to or what to do to control it w/o poison, plus it was not written in laymans language. There was very little reference to any other weeds and how to control them w/o poisons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Safer for pets May 30, 2011
By Ernie
Charles' cure for dandelions worked 100% for my mainly clay soil lawn. I have tried all sorts of petro chem solutions with mediocre results, but Charles' statement about the lack of calcium in the top soil and his advice to use gypsum to admend it worked like a champ and it keeps on working. I have even recommended this to other people who have the same problem, when they tried it it worked just as well for them too.
