Brilliant - but not just for NT,
By A Customer
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
I've never used perl on an NT but this is the book I learned from. Although it gets bad reviews here it is one of the easiest programming books I've ever read. One reviewer warns of mistakes but those mistakes are easy to see if you've ever programmed in any other language.

Excellent book for anyone wanting to learn Perl for Windows,
By A Customer
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
With so many books on the market right now dealing with Perl, most are designed for use on a UNIX platform. I had purchased several of these books trying to gain a better understanding of Perl. I was pleasantly surprised with the ease and understandability of the Perl language that this book offered. The book lists several real world scripts that every beginning webmaster, like myself, need. I would highly recommend this book as a great starting point for any beginner as well as a very usefull resource for the experienced Perl programmer

Only book for NT and Perl,
By A Customer
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
This is the only book I've read that bridges the gap betwen the UNIX world of Perl and the Microsoft hell of NT. Not as indepth on CGI as I would have liked, but Perl explainations and examples are bang on.

This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
For those of us using legacy systems, this is the most comprehensive book I've found (and I've been searching and serching...) to deal with NT and Perl when it comes to running Intranet and Internet apps. Well writtne for the beginner and the expert who needs a handy refeence to jump between Unix and NT.

I have had several clients that rely on NT servers, and this is the only book I've found that deals with Perl specifically in this environment. Very Helpful!!

Potentially useful, but muddled presentation,
By jamest@ricochet.net (Seattle, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
This book claims to be about Perl programming on NT, but is short on NT specifics. Many of the Perl scripts start with the UNIX shell idiom of "#!/usr/local/perl", even though this is ignored on NT. Various concepts are used before being explained, or even defined. One gets the impression that a bunch of UNIX Perl info had some sections about NT stapled on. The book is short on info about configuring web servers on NT, and also has no examples of advanced functions such as "system()" which were critical to the project I was doing on NT. If you're new to Perl, there are better introductions than the first third of this book. If you know Perl CGI on UNIX it'll be hard to dig out the info you need to transfer that knowledge to NT. I guess an NT webmaster who knows nothing about Perl is the best market for this book

Intellectual thief,
By A Customer
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
The author has apparently "borrowed" a lotfrom Programming Perl, 1st edition. This book is no longer being published. Do not support an intellectual robber by buying this book. For a look at his banditry, visit www.perl.com/perl, go to the book review section and see for yourself.

This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
I have just read up until chapter 2 and I have found so many mistakes in this book. If you are really new in Perl, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! This book will cause you scratching your head all day.

Forget it for learning cgi on NT,
This review is from: PC Week Programming Perl 5.0 Web Pages, with CD-ROM (PC Magazine (New York, N.Y.).) (Paperback)
There are two kind of books for learning PERL for cgi. The first kind are those that are written by smug UNIX weenies (Teach Yourself CGI Programming with PERL in a Week)in who think every one in the world is (or should be) developing on a UNIX server. At best, they admit that NT servers exist, but don't tell you how to program on them. The second type are the ones who promise to teach you cgi for NT servers using PERL, but end up being a primer on PERL with a single chapter overiew of cgi. That is what this book is. The first 185 pages are so are an overview of PERL. Then there are a couple of CGI chapters. On page 30 it states . . ."There is much more to the CGI than is covered in this book. For more information, on the CGI, there is the e-mail mailing list . . . " Unfortunately, all the books on PERL seem to be written by UNIX weenies and I have none to recommend. |
