This is a good book for reviewing spelling (perhaps over the summer or durring an extended break from studies) or as the basis of a spelling program. I would say this is geared more for the child going into first grade, or struggling with 1st grade material than an almost-second grader--if you are using it to bridge the gap of summer break.

The pages are age apropriate, black and white with small drawings, make it child-friendly but not distracting. The shaped boxes for filling in words are extremely helpful for improving handwriting as it encourages proper spacing and proper letter formation (i.e. "tall" letters, and letters with "tails" that go below the line you are writing on.) The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that some of the pages are a little vague, such as creating your own spelling words. While it was relatively easy for us to choose our own words, it might be challenging if you child is learning other word families at school, or if you just do not have time to ponder what words are appropriate for that particular lesson.

This is a book that I will purchase again when my next child reaches kindergarten.

I have found this book very helpful in my Daycare teaching over the summer months. So often, much of the learning slips away during the summer months.
