Editorial Reviews

This six-CD set has its origin, no pun intended, in pianist Chick Corea's desire to go live with an acoustic band that needed absolutely no studio gimmicking or afterthought. In that spirit, he debuted the sextet, which features Corea alongside alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trombonist Steve Davis, bassist Avishai Cohen, and drummer Adam Cruz, with music from one evening in this stretch on one CD. Even further in the spirit of unedited performances, Corea has here packaged the complete sets from three of the Blue Note nights. The sextet is in fine form, pivoting off Corea's sometimes avant-leaning pieces with great intimacy and sureness. Wilson's alto solos are each densely intelligent and modular, studying small nodes and rearranging them continually. There are also great moments where Sheppard and Wilson double on bass clarinet and E-flat clarinet, making for on-the-spot textural studies. The six CDs are built out of largely the same tunes, each taken at least twice over the course of this box set. In addition, the tunes are lengthy, with plenty of exploratory room, making for awesome solos all the way around. For fans of Corea's sharp distillation of impressionism, bebop architecture, and avant-garde nuances, this set is a must-buy. And it has the earmarks of a great all-encompassing digest, not unlike the nine-CD Art Pepper Complete Village Vanguard box set. --Andrew Bartlett

In a way, this project represents a reversed polarity of keyboard influence, allowing [Corea's] acoustic, natural preferences to affect his notions of programming and recording techniques. -- Jazz Times

There's far, far too much of a good thing on this six-CD live set.... -- Entertainment Weekly

Mr Corea has tried to reproduce on these 6CD's the sonic experience of actually being at the club BLUE NOTE to hear his band ORIGIN - thus no overdubbing, editting, minimal equalisation and so on. Technically, there should be no quibbling about the quality of the recording and the sound image of the band - even the faint sound of someone's mobile phone ringing is not a distraction. Most of the works are originals but there are three tunes by Mr Thelonious Sphere Monk, whilst Mr Miles Davis, Mr Charles Parker, Msrs Rodgers and Hart and Msrs Van Heusen and Bourke are represented by one tune each. Naturally there is plenty of space for extended solos and some tunes are played a number of times. An interesting case in point is MATRIX first performed by the then 26 year old Mr Corea on the excellent NOW HE SINGS NOW HE SOBS and reprised here three times, once at 19 minutes, once at 23 minutes and once at 13 minutes. Also intriguing and interesting is the band's theme SAY IT AGAIN which seems a free improvisation which I would have liked to have heard in extended form. Overall though, this acoustic band provides a relaxed and swinging programme of music with a very high degree of musicianship. Good value for money which is graced by some attractive abstract art originals by Mr Corea.

Six discs-61,71,71,59,73,72 minutes each approximately. The live recordings were done with a good deal of attention. The music sounds spacious and open, with clean high, middle, and lower notes clearly discernible. Each instrument is crisp sounding, even in the ensemble work. There is another set (a single CD-"Origin") with more music from this same venue and time-it's NOT highlights from this six CD set,and is every bit as good as the music in this box set. If you're not sure if you want to snap-up the box set, give this single disc a listen, and then make a decision. The booklet lists which compositions were played on which day and the times of each track. There is also Corea's thoughts on this set and band, and technical notes about the recordings, along with small color photos of the band members. There's also a list, much like a spread-sheet,of the complete set lists performed at the Blue Note, which gives a bit more insight into the recordings. The discs are housed in stiff, folded paper sleeves, with info about the music on that disc, and a different color photo of the band on stage. Everything is housed in a substantial cardboard box that's open at one end to access the discs.

This set contains some of the best small group jazz being played (and luckily recorded) in the present time. Chick Corea,on this set,is every bit the equal of even more well known artists such as Keith Jarrett,or any of the other acoustic pianists playing today. This set has a number of compositions by Corea,in addition to others by Jimmy Van Heusen,Thelonious Monk,Miles Davis,Charlie Parker, and others. All the compositions are starting points for his (then) new band to work out on. The compositions,no matter what the tempo, have a good mix of group playing and soloing.

What would be the most spectacular live recording that he ever gave in his
rich, highly creative career, Chick Corea again impressed the music world with
this lavish sweeping 6-CD set from 1998 that became perhaps his most direct
and un-opinionated way he can think or perform to various listeners within any
medium. Recorded live during a four night stay at The Blue Note in New York
City in January of that year, A Week At The Blue Note is his lavishly-produced
highly structured chronicle of the live event that was carefully made and highly
presented with unique enthusiasm in such a way the great keyboard maestro
could ever have presented. Featuring the acclaimed acoustic band Origin, the
massive dimensional track set features a fresh vibrant array of solid extended
compositions--old and new--and dazzling takes on classic standards, there is
certainly much to enjoy as Chick Corea & Origin sets the pace for world class
excellence played to high swinging improvisational skill and crescendo-driven
grandeur. Starting with there introduction theme entrance, Say it Again, Disc
One begins with the classic Corea standard Double Image as it conclude with
Bewitched--a breezy take on Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered, a second
take on Say It Again, and a long exhilarating version of Bud Powell’s Tempus
