Book Description

Weekend Crafter September 28, 2003
Beautifully photographed and created for the beginner, this fabulous introductory basketry course, with 18 enticing projects, will have you finishing a decorative basket the very first weekend. The author offers the fruits of her 30 years' experience: time-tested tips for adding bases, shaping baskets, substituting materials, adding embellishments and many more tricks. A wealth of knowledge on reeds covers everything from preparation to dyeing and finishing, and there's instruction on all the different basket-weaving structures. The projects teach a variety of techniques, each one building upon the last. Start with a small Basic Basket that uses 11 key procedures, and then move on to a charming Market Basket, which includes an attractive handle. Then try a Storage Basket, Hanging Letter Basket, Nantucket-inspired Spiral Twill Basket, or a Bathroom Catch-All. Plus: a beautiful gallery from an international selection of basket artists.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Weave a basket in two days? No problem. Retailer and artisan Crawford shares 30 years' worth of experience, and all 18 projects have been designed to be completed in a weekend (the series is the Weekend Crafter). The introduction to basics seems underdeveloped for beginners, but that disadvantage is overcome in the projects themselves. There are no shortcuts on information here; page after page is devoted to photographic instructions for both general techniques and steps in completing each particular basket. Baskets are grouped according to technique, whether employing colored reeds or round-base patterns. Choose from elementary designs--a basic or muffin basket--or those more complicated, such as a cachepot or a Shaker-inspired cat's-head bowl. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, January 8, 2007
This review is from: The Weekend Crafter: Basketry: 18 Easy & Beautiful Baskets to Make (Paperback)
This book has very precise instructions which the beginning weaver can easily follow. The pictures are large and very well presented. The author takes the weaver thru each step as it occurs-for example, gathering the needed materials, measuring and cutting the material, and finally each step in the weaving process as it occurs. The decorative accents that are either woven in or added after the basket is completed are easily accomplished and add to the appeal of the basket.
I wish the author had included names of suppliers for the reeds, seagrass etc.
Although we are intermediate weavers, everyone in our group ordered the book simply because of the way it was written and illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, September 30, 2010
This review is from: The Weekend Crafter: Basketry: 18 Easy & Beautiful Baskets to Make (Paperback)
This is the best book I've seen for beginning to intermediate basket makers. Complete supply lists, great pictures, and clear step-by-step instructions make this a keeper. It's the only book about basket making I got out of the library that I just had to own. This book teaches basic techniques and keeps weavers interested by teaching different bases, rims, and weaves -- with additional decorations as an option. You'll go to this book again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Challenge, May 25, 2011
This review is from: The Weekend Crafter: Basketry: 18 Easy & Beautiful Baskets to Make (Paperback)
This is a well-organized book, each project has enough of a difference between it and the other projects in the book to make for interest, and the photos and directions are excellent. My one regret about this book is that no basket here is much of a challenge. Still, that may be just what weekend crafters want, and so the book lives up to what its title promises, and that's important.
