Book Description

August 28, 2002 Weekend Crafter
It’s amazing that such simple materials—wool, soap, hot water—can result in fabric as infinitely varied in form and color as felt. The key is playful experimentation and this creative guide, which reveals exactly which wools to use, the effects of using hard versus soft water, and how to agitate the wool. Twenty colorful projects range from an inviting rug to a rolled Spiral Bracelet to slippers.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The "Weekend Crafter" series is exactly that-a series of books for people interested in learning a new craft without necessarily devoting their lives to it. Hagen has taught felt making in the United States and Europe, and her hand-felted wool is in many private and museum collections. Here she takes the reader step by step through the process of hand felt making. Closeup color photos illustrate each step in making beginner's felt projects such as solid felt balls and the basic flat felt needed for wearable felt pieces. Projects of note include an ambitious, life-size stuffed cat wearing a necklace of felted beads, small felted bags and bracelets, and warm felt slippers. Books on crafts like felt making, which requires supplies like Merino wool sliver not available at your local craft store, cry out for lists of suppliers. It appears that the publisher has decided to omit such lists from many of its titles and to make them available on its web site instead-a good idea because the lists can be kept up-to-date more easily. Unfortunately, at press time, the list for this book was not yet available on the Lark web site. The price is right for this collection of colorful felt projects. Recommended for public libraries.

3.0 out of 5 stars True Felt-Making, NOT felting knits., December 20, 2006

I read this book along with a few others to get some inspiration and learn more about the felting process. While this book is very informative and well written, please be advised that it contains instruction specific to the use of wool batts or roving type material and not yarns. If that is what you are looking for, then this the book for you.

If not, try out:

"Knit One, Felt Too: Discover the magic of knitted felt with 25 easy patterns (Paperback)

by Kathleen Taylor "

I think you will find it a nice beginners guide to felting knit projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the Basics and More, February 23, 2009

This is a wonderful book for those who want to learn wet-felting techniques. Wet felting takes a little time, but if you like working with your hands, particularly with warm, soapy water, this book is a good guide. By following her instructions you can make strong, uniform, colorful pieces of felt to use in other projects, or shape the wet wool as you go to make more than rectangles. She describes details such as the kinds of soap she uses and how to layer the wool roving, as well as resist techniques for making bags or mittens. She goes beyond basic techniques, too, offering ideas for using felt in different ways. I made a few of the projects and was really inspired to make more. For a quick look at wet felting, this is a fantastic resource.
