Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Both of these books have interesting and colorful step-by-step projects for decorating paper and using it for craft items. Browning (Handcrafted Journals, Albums, Scrapbooks, & More) uses handmade or purchased specialty papers for marbling, tie-dyeing, and other painting techniques. Projects for using the paper are suggested, but the emphasis is on decorating paper. Lee's projects include making paper from a variety of recycled materials as well as fashioning it into books and household decorations. Beginners may find Lee's general instructions for papermaking somewhat skimpy, although adequate for these projects, and may want to go on to consult a more complete guide such as John Plowman's The Craft of Handmade Paper (LJ 2/15/98). Both of these books are useful additions to public libraries needing more of this sort of material.

5.0 out of 5 stars From collages, cards, and stationery to hand-bound books, August 6, 2001
This review is from: The Weekend Crafter: Papermaking: Beautiful Papers and Projects to Make in a Weekend (Paperback)
The Weekend Crafter: Papermaking is a gorgeous "how-to" artist's manual to the craft of creating all kinds of paper - from collages, cards, and stationery to hand-bound books and paper lanterns. It shows how to recycle common everyday items, such as corrugated cardboard, old seat fabric, and old sewing patterns into pulp for fresh paper crafts. 12 step-by-step projects with instructive color photography, unambiguous directions and complete templates make this book a superior tutorial into a fascinating, colorful, and practical hobby!

I have participated in several workshops with Claudia Lee. She is a very accomplished artist and teacher. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that it is labeled as a "craft" book. Claudia takes her craft to the level of professional artist.

I like the way Claudia covers the whole process from tools to final ideas. I have used her lessons in my own work and in the high school art classes that I teach. This is a wonderful book for the fine art of papermaking. If you are interested in this art form in any way, Claudia Lee is the one to consult for ideas and instruction.
