Twelve months to self-sufficiency!

This fully updated second edition of the popular Weekend Homesteader series includes exciting, short projects that you can use to dip your toes into the vast ocean of homesteading without getting overwhelmed. If you need to fit homesteading into a few hours each weekend and would like to have fun while doing it, these projects will be right up your alley, whether you live on a forty-acre farm, a postage-stamp lawn in suburbia, or a high rise.

The June volume includes the following projects:
  • Start a compost pile
  • Build a worm bin
  • Experiment with seasonings
  • Calculate your real hourly wage

The second edition has been revised and expanded to match the paperback, with extra photos and feedback from weekend homesteaders just like you, plus permaculture-related avenues for the more advanced homesteader to explore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, but doable! July 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wow! What a value for this E-book! It's jam-packed with information to complete not one, but four June weekend projects (or December in the southern hemisphere).

The step-by-step directions with all you need to know to set up an inexpensive red worm composting bin alone are worth the price of the whole issue!

The author includes many helpful photos, drawings, and diagrams which illustrate each step along the way - detailed, but simple enough to be doable.

I especially loved the "Survey Your Site" project. While I already do lay out my vegetable garden using graph paper, I hadn't previously thought about some of the broader homestead "mapping" concepts that Anna suggested.

I can't wait to read next month's issue!

5.0 out of 5 stars good down to "earth" advice May 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the third volume of the magazine that I have read and I love each one. I currently live in a small city in the Philippines and have a small piece of property not far outside the city. When I lived in Germany I often saw people enjoying their Kleingarten when I would walk in the countryside, these were small plots of land often around 200 or 300 square meters in size that people would use for gardening normally erecting small places to stay for a weekend of gardening. I recently decided to do something similar to my property. These guides have given me many good suggestions, in this volume the site map was especially helpful as I was starting one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative for the beginner to intermediate March 1, 2013

I have learned at least one new thing to do with homesteading in each of these chapters. I would recommend any of these books. I am just getting started with homesteading, and these made me see that a little can be done at a time to make a difference.

More About the Author

Anna Hess dreamed about moving back to the land ever since her parents dragged her off their family farm at the age of eight. She worked as a field biologist and nonprofit organizer before acquiring fifty-eight acres and a husband, then quit her job to homestead full time. She admits that real farm life involves a lot more hard work than her childhood memories entailed, but the reality is much more fulfilling and she loves pigging out on sun-warmed strawberries and experimenting with no-till gardening, mushroom propagation, and chicken pasturing.
