Great suggestions for how to start gardening,
By David Hale (Herriman, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Weekend Homesteader: May (Kindle Edition)
As a long time reader of Anna's blog at WaldenEffect.org, I appreciate her down-to-earth way of talking about her experiences with her garden and research. While her blog goes into detail about her test successes and failures, this eBook condenses her most successful trials into a simple approach that beginner and experienced gardeners alike will benefit from. Her liberal use of diagrams and photos take the guess work out of her step-by-step instructions.
While my clay garden soil in the Western U.S. is very different from the fertile soil in Virginia where Anna lives, her suggestion for creating a kill mulch is greatly beneficial for me as well. I have had a difficult time dealing with dry, heavy clay so I'm hopeful that adding thicker layers of compost and mulch this year will get around this problem.

I very much enjoyed the first issue of "Weekend Homesteader" and I will be purchasing the issues that follow. It's written with easy to understand directions for the projects that are included. I also like that she doesn't ramble on and all information was to the point. The projects included are quite usable and don't cost a lot.

I'm still reading it, and will re-read it as well. Gives folks the bare bones start in short easy to follow steps. I'm looking forward to the future issues as well. I'm currently doing container vegetable gardening in SIPS but planning "no-till" beds for the future. None of the projects will break the bank either, well except that to put in rain barrels in our arid area, I would have to put in gutters first.

This was a great read which gave an overview of some interesting homesteading topics and was easy to understand. It covered a handful of topics but wasn't overwhelming which motivated me to get to work on some of the topics covered as soon as I finished reading. A big plus was having resources and links to research any of the topics further as well as a place to share your experiences. The personal accounts that are included in the information also make it a fun read since you are not just overwhelmed with information. I'm looking forward to future volumes.

Great Ideas for Getting Started,
By Christine Shuck (Belton, Missouri) - See all my reviews

Anna is off to a great start with her Weekend Homesteader series. What I especially like about this series is that she introduces simple and affordable projects which are so do-able to the beginner. I teach classes on gardening and I often hear, "Wow, I love your garden, but how do I get started?" And since I've been gardening and growing for years now, it is sometimes hard to advise the newbies. I think I'll send them here or to Anna's blog for more info!
We can all make changes in how we live, how we spend our time, and what we do on a daily basis that will make a profound impact on our health, our emotional outlook, and our community. This ebook will help you get started on that.

I've been gardening off and on for 40 years and am very glad I bought Anna's book. I learned a few things (it's good to remain teachable) and am looking forward to future issues.
