5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for would-be homesteaders! October 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I love the concept of this series - presenting one simple homesteading project for each weekend of each month. For many people, me included, the idea of homesteading taken as a whole - become self-sufficient now! - is just too overwhelming, too much work. But here, we have baby steps; manageable, well-defined, difficulty-level-rated measures to move you along that road at a comfortable pace, and that over time I'm sure will produce huge results.

As a long-time reader of the author's blog, I knew before I read this guide that there would be some good content, since the blog entries are great, too. However, here in the longer format of an e-book, her writing style really shines - very approachable, knowledgeable and full of good insights. There are tons of photos, which is helpful for visual learners like myself, and the projects themselves are indeed useful and pertinent to the season. I will definitely be getting these guides every month in the future.

I love it! Anna does a great job with these books. She gives excelent, practical, easy to follow adice and project ideas. Anna doesn't just tell you about the idea of a project or product, she builds and used the same thing for her to use and takes pictures and gives instructions for how you can do it too.

Buy it it is worth every penny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner in this series. August 29, 2012

I've picked up most of this series when they show up on the top 100 free list and this one, like the others, does not disappoint. The article on hooped row covers showed the upside and downside to their usage. I think when I construct mine I'll actually do things a little differently and make it a bit more user friendly; i.e., large enough to actually enter, like a greenhouse, so I don't have to constantly mess with the covers just to get to my vegetables. As usual, the articles are well written, thought provoking and helpful to those who might be looking to simplify their lifestyle. Highly recommended to one and all.

More About the Author

Anna Hess dreamed about moving back to the land ever since her parents dragged her off their family farm at the age of eight. She worked as a field biologist and nonprofit organizer before acquiring fifty-eight acres and a husband, then quit her job to homestead full time. She admits that real farm life involves a lot more hard work than her childhood memories entailed, but the reality is much more fulfilling and she loves pigging out on sun-warmed strawberries and experimenting with no-till gardening, mushroom propagation, and chicken pasturing.
