4.0 out of 5 stars A fun short story., January 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mad Weekend (Open Door) (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of Roddy Doyle's writing, and I did enjoy this story. I didn't realize when I purchased this, however, that "Mad Weekend" is a fairly short story; it would have been perhaps 20 pages long in regular-sized font and layout. The story is worth reading, but had I known that is was a short story rather than a novel, I might have sought it at a library rather than spending the money it too to purchase it.

1.0 out of 5 stars So three lads go into a pub, see, and the bartender says..., January 10, 2010
This review is from: Mad Weekend (Open Door) (Paperback)
What can I say about about a book that's 104 pages long and has dialog like this,

" Pat was beside Dave.
'I can't find Ben,' he said.
'He's over there,' said Dave.
'Where?' said Pat.
'I don't know,' said Dave.
'He's not here,' said Pat.
'He's fine,' said Dave. 'He's with a bird.'
'How do you know?' Pat asked.
'I don't know,' said Dave. 'I just think he is.'
'Why?'
'Because I am, Pat,' said Dave. 'And so are you. Go over to Barb. She misses you.'
'She misses her dog,' said Pat.
'You be her dog, Pat,' said Dave."

except, I'm glad it wasn't longer? Luckily, I picked this one up at the local library and didn't spend $12 for it. All 104 pages are just like page 36 above. I suspect the author, Roddy Doyle, was sitting in a pub nursing a pint of Guinness as he dashed this off between a couple of games of darts. I've never read any of Mr. Doyle's novels, I understand that he has written eight, but if they are anything like MAD WEEKEND, I never will.

My one star rating was way too high. Don't waste your time reading this book.
