This review is from: Weekend with Velazquez (Hardcover)
I was unfamiliar with Florian Rodari`s "Weekend" series of children's books, so I thought I was buying one for adults. What I actually got was far better: some "face" time with this marvelous Spanish portraitist and probably as good an understanding of his basic painting style as I would have achieved by reading an adult title. The surprise found inside this gem included an exciting, vicarious weekend with "Grandfather Velasquez," portrait painter of royalty. It also included a whirlwind, behind-the-scenes tour of King Philip's palace, complete with "Grandfather's" observations about the people he painted and their real perspectives. Since Velasquez painted the royal children, dwarfs, and palace pets, these are described in detail (including information about their daily lives) and should be of special interest to children. This would be a wonderful and classy gift for a young person in the six- to 13- year age range. Or get one for your grownup self, acquaint yourself with Velasquez, then give your copy to a deserving young person!
