Book Description

Countryman Guide May 1, 2006
The curious wanderer's guide to the colorful history and the rich natural diversity of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay area.

Follow the trails in this all-new guide, and you'll discover deep forests, secluded beaches, and unexpected wild landscapes. Jay Abercrombie deftly weaves his expertise in biology and ecology with a boundless interest in the ebb and flow of the human tide through the centuries.

The Delmarva Peninsula dangles close to the Baltimore-Washington-Philadelphia megalopolis, but it has always remained apart from the fast-paced urban world, maintaining a charming agrarian and maritime flavor with strong colonial roots. The walks in this book range from easy strolls to a challenging backpacking trip, and meander through old millpond areas, 18th-century villages, historic forts, and a rich diversity of natural habitats. A mild winter climate makes this region inviting for exploration all year 'round. 40 black & white photographs, 36 maps, index.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is what it purports to be, a good guide to walks in Delmarva., January 27, 2008

Having flipped through this book I now have plans for several excursions once the weather improves. The book lays out a wide variety of hikes with descriptions, pictures, and maps. Based on these details and the estimated times, I expect this book will lead me through at least half a dozen different day trips. It offers just what I was hoping it would; I'm going to enjoy using this book.

Don't be put off by this book's publication date. It's a great book for anyone who's thinking about exploring the trails and parks on the Delmarva Peninsula. Many of these places are frozen in time, little affected by the bustle of civilization surrounding them.

The author appears to have actually visited each of these places so his descriptions and directions are accurate. I was especially impressed by his detailing of the trails on Assateague and Kent Island's Terrapin Nature Park. Included in this book are helpful maps and contact information. If hiking before fall's first freeze, insect repellent is a must, lots of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, March 15, 2011

This book is just exactly what I was looking for. Last year I decided I wanted to start hiking again as I hadn't for several years. Not having hiked in this area before, I needed some sort of reference for finding trails. This book offers a great assortment of short hikes, long hikes, close spots, and those far away. A great resource for anyone looking to hike on Delmarva!

One word to the wise: the Wicomico Demonstration Forest is full of ticks (at least from my experience in September). Wear lots of repellent or even gaiters!
