This is one of the best books I have found for teaching children to pay attention to details. Recognizing the spelling patterns of words and categorizing is something my second graders are getting very good at doing.I use this as part of their spelling homework every week! It may not be the same words, but they are learning to recognize the patterns and this transfers into words they encounter in reading.I loaned my other copy to a collegue and it was never returned, so I hopped online and quickly ordered another. I can't plan my homework without it.

This is a great book to use to review various phonics elements using words sorts. I teach 3rd grade, and most of my student use but confuse many of the elements in these sorts. I use the sorts for RTI intervention and whole class instruction. I love this book! I highly recommend it for preservice, Title I, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers. I have also created my own sorts based on my students' spelling inventory data and I use Maher's teaching methods. Another great resource for teachers trying to improve spelling, fluency, and decoding.

Not for the ages it states,
This review is from: Weekly Word Sorts That Build Spelling Skills (Paperback)
This is great activities for maybe late first grades and up, but the 4-8 age range is wrong. I bought it to work on short vowel sounds with my Kindergarten and short vs. long sounds with my advanced kids. All the sorts are a struggle for my advanced kids to read and has become a small group activity with a lot of support needed.
Great book for the older grades though. |
