5.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up
6 Weeks proved to be an indispensible tool in my job search. Explaining why agencies, ads, resumes and the internet don't yield results, the book goes on to lay out a faster, better way to the job you want. I'm convinced that without this invaluable book I'd still be looking.

This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
I think this book could be very helpful to first-time job-seekers b/c it gives info that sometimes takes us "experienced" job-hunters years to figure out. However...while I agree with the author's basically straightforward approach (and have found it be successful in the past), there is something slightly underhanded he recommends: pretending to seek an "informational interview" when your are actually seeking a job. Yes, you'll probably get an interview more easily if you ask for an informational interview, but the hirer might be irritated when s/he discovers your hidden motive. Why not tell the truth about your intentions and quickly move on if they are disinterested? Sure, you may get rejected, but that's a natural part of a job-hunt..

Also: there is some useful info but it's not really new or unusual, I've heard it all before, and it's presented in a sensationalist way (i.e. "this will change your life forever!!!" "never been seen before!!" tone - very sales-y and magical sounding) that is a bit off-putting.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book with no substance., September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
This book is a repeat of job hunting ideas that have been around for 30 years. It is already well established that the best way to get a job is not help wanted ads or recruiters. The book doesn't help you prepare a particularly good resume or cover letter. It promotes the idea of cold calling but leaves the reader with the task of developing your own ideas for how to accomplish this. I would not recommend this book. You would be better off to purchase a book on resume preparation and letter writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Unique, October 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
Warning: this book is very different from other job hunting books. First, because the procedure it describes actually works -- that's different in and of itself. Second, because the "looking" phase and non-resume approach is a welcome change. Using 6 Weeks I got the type of job I was looking for, and I'll definitely use this book the next time I look for a job.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, October 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
The mistake I was making was that I applied, as most of us do, for job openings. But as 6 Weeks points out, openings are the least desirable jobs. (Otherwise they wouldn't be "open".) You also have a lot of competition for them. 6 Weeks shows how to be considered for jobs that are not listed, advertised or published -- better jobs where you eliminate the competition. I got the job I wanted in just 4 weeks, and I did have to mail a resume to get it. This is an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great buy and a great find, October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
What intrigued me about this book was its money back guarantee -- a job you'll actually want in 6 weeks or less. I was skeptical, but since no other book on the list offered such a guarantee I figured I had nothing to lose -- and was pleasantly surprised at how indespensible 6 Weeks is. Instead of ad listings and resumes, it explains a simpler, more logical approach to employers. I followed the easy, common-sense steps and voila, they got me the job. It's nothing short of amazing how well the system works. Needless to say I am very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should be the standard job-hunting guide, September 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
Six Weeks explains why applying for job openings is the wrong approach for getting the job you want. Instead, it describes the right approach, eliminating the need to mail out resumes, answer help-wanted ads or use headhunters/employment agencies. All of which I hated. And Six Weeks is neat because it's not textbooky. I was getting nowhere before I got it. Now I'll never look for a job the same way again. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It made all the difference.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book did not meet my expectations., September 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
I was extremely disappointed when I received John Schwab's book. I am changing careers and I expected better advise. The information was very basic, the type of advise I received from my college placement office 15 years ago.

There were few examples of resumes or cover letters. The $19.95 I spent on this book would have been better spent on something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Job searching methods that really work!, April 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
I found 6 Weeks a refreshing change from the average "How To" books. It is written in an easy-to-read conversational tone and offers people and entirely new job seeking approach. By using the methods in this short book, I found a new and practically fail-safe way to get my foot in the door virtually anywhere I tried. As someone just entering the job market, 6 Weeks offered me the insight that I needed to set myself apart from the hundreds of other applicants in my position. The book could also be extremely useful to anyone in the job market because it offers solutions to why the average job seeking methods usually fail. I enjoyed 6 Weeks mainly because it offers an in-your-face, no excuses way to get the job of your choice. Anyone who reads this book is able to take advantage of the author's years of job seeking experience. The author was not just blowing hot air when he named the book, it actually works!

5.0 out of 5 stars A job hunting approach that works, October 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 6 Weeks or Less: The Job You Really Want, Guaranteed (Spiral-bound)
I was getting nowhere in my job search until I got 6 Weeks. The reason is, I was looking for the job I wanted the wrong way. 6 Weeks showed me how to do it the right way, and the best part is, you don't have to mail resumes or pour over help wanted ads. You can also dispense with employment agencies -- they didn't help either. 6 Weeks is very different from the other job hunting manuals I consulted, none of which helped. This one did.
