I found this book to be moderately informative, but also a tad hypocritical. Dr. L emphasizes many times throughout the book that everyone's skin is individual and reacts to certain products differently, however, she constantly touts "favorite" ingredients as surefire treatments, ignoring the fact that what works wonders for her may be drastically irritating or...

I am now in week 5 of this very fun and easy camp. I've been trying it out with some friends at work and we are all seeing results. I think in the first week I saw major changes following Dr. Loretta's advice of changing my pillow case and my detergent. I have had way fewer blemishes and cut out some acne products that were actually doing more harm than good in the redness department. I am highly recommending this book to EVERYONE! It is truly fabulous and even the adorable cover makes me smile (people have asked me why I look so happy and bright the past few days!). Hats off to Dr. Loretta for writing such a helpful manual for navigating the cosmetics world!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars New and cheaper spin on skincare and looking your best :-), September 27, 2006

This review is from: 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin: Dr. Loretta's Beauty Camp Handbook for Your Freshest Face (Hardcover)
This truly is a book for everyone. Like a reviewer says below, it is for guys too. When you think about it, skin is skin whether it's on a male or female and everyone needs to take care of it.

We all look for 'the fountain of youth' in bottles and jars or even plastic surgury, but Loretta Ciraldo is helping us think of a more simpler way and a cheaper way to make the most of what we have and to help keep it in the best condition we can. As someone who works partially in the beauty industry, this makes sense even to me. It isn't always necessary to spend heaps of money on skin care - you CAN do it the simple way.

Loretta Ciraldo is a professor of dermatology, so she knows her stuff. She says we can do little things like changing your pillowcase. Residue from products can be sitting in the material of the case and you press your face into it all night long. Makes sense. Also a higher thread count is softer on the skin. If we wash it about twice a week, it's better for us. Also, careful with the shampoos that might be great for our hair but not so good for our skin. The chemicals in those products can be irritating for skin.

These are just a few examples of the easy things we can do to help ourselves out. I'm on week 3 and I'm not sure if it's psycological or not, but I feel like it's looking a little better. I'm sure we can all give it a go since it won't cost a fortune and we certainly have nothing to lose. I think she has some great advice and so anyone with skin concerns or who wants to improve it's appearance, should really give this a go. I love it.

Gentlemen out there, this message is for you. Don't be fooled by the pink cover, there's lots of great insight for us. As a man, I never thought much about taking care of my skin. But after reading through this powerful book, I realized what a difference a few simple, easy steps can make--and how quickly I can see results. My girlfriend thinks so, too!

I am thankful that this book is out there to educate all of us trying to swim our way through the drugstore for skincare products. I love that this book focuses on the functional concentrations of active ingredients found in products instead of recommending brand names in an effort to teach us to understand what we are buying and using. I can personally attest that I have spent money on snake oil in the past and using the principles in this book am hopefully on the right path to better skincare.

This book requires a thoughtful read and while it is not a complicated manual I have my own copy to serve as a reference. Get it from the library first if you are unsure whether you want to commit to a skin care regimen that is more than a 'wash your face and slap on cream' kind of thing. If you are then you will probably find that it is a book worth owning.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, September 7, 2008
This review is from: 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin: Dr. Loretta's Beauty Camp Handbook for Your Freshest Face (Hardcover)
I found this book to be moderately informative, but also a tad hypocritical. Dr. L emphasizes many times throughout the book that everyone's skin is individual and reacts to certain products differently, however, she constantly touts "favorite" ingredients as surefire treatments, ignoring the fact that what works wonders for her may be drastically irritating or ineffective for someone else. While it's true that this book had some interesting information on skin care ingredients, most of Loretta's advice is made with the assumption that your skin will react the same way that hers does, despite all of her attempts to be objective.

I picked up this book hoping it could help me with acne that's been troubling me for a few years. Dr. Loretta says very little on treating acne, as her book is primarily focused on adressing wrinkles and other age-related issues. If age is your primary concern, that you may find this book useful, however, if you're looking to improve your skin's clarity, this isn't the book for you. Dr. L's only significant comment on acne treatment is her reccommendation of salycilic acid, a common sense suggestion, as this ingredient is found in virtually every acne treatment avaliable. She also suggests Benzoyl Peroxide (an ingredient that works for some but greatly aggravates conditions for almost just as many) without any caution or mention of profound side-effects. I had been hoping, in reading this, that I would find less superficial advice on skin-clearing than "salycilic acid works for everyone and will clear your skin" (this is not a direct quote from the book,by the way). If salycilic acid worked that simply, than anti-acne treatments would work perfectly, and no one would suffer uncurable acne.

I wouldn't denounce this book one hundred percent, but, for my purposes, it was disappointing. If you're looking for specifically anti-aging solutions, this book may provide a vaguely helpful guide to composing a new regime, but at best I would suggest simply getting a copy from the library. It's not nearly helpful or informative enough to warrant a purchase.

This review is from: 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin: Dr. Loretta's Beauty Camp Handbook for Your Freshest Face (Hardcover)
This book is the best book I've ever read for the home user of skin care products who need help in selecting cleansers, toners, moisturizers, etc. I am recommending this book to all of my clients. It is nice to discover my views and philosopy of skin care (after nearly 20 years in the field) (which I teach my clients) agree with about 98% of what Dr. Ciraldo promotes...a nice validation for me!

This book is very interesting and informative. I was disappointed, although many skin care ingredients were covered, DMAE was not one of them. Definitely a good starting point to learning about modern skin care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, June 10, 2009
By

This review is from: 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin: Dr. Loretta's Beauty Camp Handbook for Your Freshest Face (Hardcover)
Rather than try dozens of beauty products whose marketing I don't trust, I've tended to ignore them and hope for the best anyway. I never know how to wade through the bewildering amount of products available and find good info on what really works. But I've really wanted better skin tone and something for circles under my eyes, especially since I don't usually wear makeup foundation.

I started reading another book by a dermatologist on skincare and it overwhelmed me, plus the tone put me off (it's a male dermatologist who's nice enough, but doesn't know what it's like to be a woman and how we--or at least, I--think).

So, when I started this book, I found it refreshing! The tone is inviting and friendly and Dr. Loretta makes it really seem possible that I can have great skin without making a lot of purchases on things that won't turn out to work.

I didn't know where to start and now I feel I do. I can't spend the money to do a fraction of what Dr. Loretta does, (though I can think about doing more when I'm older), but certain tips, for example, her info on what kind of eye cream to use, I plan to put to immediate use. Also, her web site is great. ([...])

My favorite paragraph in the book is on page 95 where, after giving her daily beauty regimen, she mentions that it works well enough that she chooses not to wear foundation. That is my kind of dermatologist! It just made me happy to read that. From the rest of the book, it will be obvious that she cares about her appearance (and uses botox, for example), but I love it that she draws the line at face lifts and that she's a makeup minimalist (of sorts). She even includes a couple of face exercises (which I've seen some other professionals scoff at) and I liked it that she handpicked two favorites to recommend. What it comes down to is I like her style.

As another reviewer said, the book doesn't have detailed info on acne treatments. So that's a weak spot, but overall, this books is straight talk about how to look your best, and for what it is, I think it's great.
