5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST LIVE BAND AROUND...ON DVD FINALLY!!!, May 2, 2004
By
Brian Wood (North Haven, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
I was able to get this a few days early than I was supposed to. As a hard core Ween fan, I couldn't be more pleased to finally see them on DVD. I've been to see them six times, and this dvd contains everything that goes along with the experience of Ween. With a great track selection....Voodoo Lady, the Argus, Big jilm, Buckingham Green. Not to mention the "to the T" cover of All of my Love(zeppelin). With a cornucopia of camera angles, and three songs with a directors cut option. It keeps you completely entertained from start to finish. It's great just to see their stage antics, like Dean's face pulling, and Gene's lounge singer like moves. Anyone who has seen them live, will be way more than satisfied. And anyone who hasn't caught them yet, or think their studio stuff is just too strange. You may start out apprehensive, but you'll LOVE em by the time the Blarney Stone rolls around. They cover every genre of music, with "tongue in cheek" lyrics. All the while flat out ROCKING the entire time. Fork over twenty bucks, help the cause of Ween and their god of wealth and power...boognish

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no way I can go lower than 5 stars.........., February 11, 2005

This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
Ween's "Live in Chicago" provides an amazing glimpse into the Ween phenomenon. This is a band that many have written off as being simply too goofy to be taken seriously. Their career has spanned many years, and the critics haven't been kind for most of it. The fact is though, Ween is a great band.....and this DVD is a prime example of that.

Set at Chicago's Vic Theatre, Ween takes the stage and proceeds to kick your ass. The songlist is very diverse....bridging that long career....and showing off the band's range of styles. Ween can be very melodic, and many of the songs on "Live in Chicago" show their outstanding songwriting ability. Standouts include: "Buckingham Green", "Take Me Away", "Transdermal Celebration", "Voodoo Lady", "Roses are Free", "Mutilated Lips", "Zoloft", and "Big Jilm". Hell, every song is solid.

The best part about this DVD is the sound. The 5.1 mix is crystal clear, and the camera angles are perfect. Many concert DVD producers haven't quite figured the editing formula out yet, but this DVD has great cuts.

Ween has done themselves a favor by releasing this DVD. I think many people will be converted fans after viewing "Live in Chicago."

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, August 19, 2004
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
Ween has always been a great live band, and they've shown that since their first official live CD release "Paintin' The Town Brown". Since then there has been a steady supply of live Ween; including the 3 disc set "Live at Stubbs," "Live in Toronto" touring for their country album, and now "Live in Chicago" with a DVD. This DVD is spectacular. Mastered in 5.1 surround and great picture quality. They change the songs so much, refusing to recreate the studio album version of the song. This makes the concert so much fun and instresting to watch. They change instruments, lyrics, add/change sound effects; it's fantastic. And Dean must be one of the greatest guitarists in music today; some of those solos were just sick, such as "I'll be your Johnny on the spot" or "Voodoo lady"; just tearing up every song with some killer lead guitar. Also, a great cover of Led Zeppelin's "All of my love". This is a must own for Ween lovers, and for anyone who appreciates good music and a great live performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars ween cream dream, May 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
if you love ween and havent bought the disc yet, maybe you're just short on funds. make it a priority!!! it's so very brown.

if you're new to the band, this is the perfect way to learn what all the fuss is about. everything wonderful about them is present in spades on this set. masterful melodies that stand on their own, even w/o their brilliant, peerless lyrics. and if you can watch gene ween sing w/o being utterly charmed, i'll give you a dollar!

from start to finish, the chicago concert rocks, balls to the wall. deaner growling out the 'blarney stone' is alone worth the purchase price. actually, so is the video for Transdermal Celebration - i'm still blown away by it... one of THE coolest videos EVER.

if you're even remotely interested in ween, you will not be disappointed w/ this set. buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOLY CRAP!!!!, February 21, 2005

This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
This DVD is mind blowing! The track list is a solid representation of the band and each song is performed to perfection. The live cd is also a great addition to any Ween collection and the cartoon video to Transdermal Celebration is absolutely amazing. Ween is easily the most brilliant band around today taht no one knows about. I won't be able to die a happy man until i see a WEen concert. You should make it a priority for yourself too. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget going to a stadium...go see Ween!, October 20, 2004
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
Hands down, there is no better live act in rock today than Ween. I cannot get enough of seeing these guys live. While there's no substitute for seeing them in person, this will at least keep you satisfied until you can get your next fix of Ween.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brothers Ween Rock the House, November 11, 2007
I have always believed that rock music is better when played live. The Brothers Ween are masters in the recording studio; if you own their albums you know they are talented musicians. One may ask, if they rock in the studio, can they rock on stage?

Ween fans rejoice! These boys sound better on stage! These live songs are explosive and glorious when played on stage. Passionate rock music should be dirty, furious, loud, and obnoxious; these boys are passionate. Ween play loud and no-so-loud; they play their softer songs ("Chocolate Town" and "Pork Roll Egg and Cheese") and their harder songs ("I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot" and "Voodoo Lady").

This collection is worth the money; Ween play 26 live tracks. This collection includes a DVD (26 tracks) and a CD (17 tracks). (I bought this collection for a modest $19.99.) The CD can be ripped to your audio player and the DVD can be played on your home theater system. The video is anamorphic (for 16:9 televisions) and the audio is 5.1 Dolby surround!

Ween fans should not be without this gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concert Movies et al, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
Concert movies tend to suck, the very fact that it's recorded and you're watching it in your living room breaks with what's happening, and they tend to end up feeling "guh." You can't feel the energy in the room, you can't look where you would normally look (take a glance at a person around you and you can see how they react) so all of that "ambience" is lost.

I used to do the ween website before they did their own, so I'm biased here, but Ween is such a great live band and it totally shows on this DVD. Their craftsmanship is top notch.

I would agree with the other reviewer about the energy level and level of showmanship being lower than a typical ween show, I think the fact that the cameras were present has a lot to do with that.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome sound, get it now, October 7, 2004
This review is from: Ween: Live in Chicago (with Bonus CD) (DVD)
this is truly the most awesome band, playing their brownsound

for all. If you live somewhere too far away to see them for real

(like the UK) or if you want to watch them 20 times a day. buy before you die.

Its worth the money for Adams 'Transdermal Celebration' vid which is the best flash animated music vid on this planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Just brilliant., January 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
On the fence about Ween? Heard of them and want to know a little more? With their vast catalogue its hard to know where to start, but I will save you the time and let you know that this is where you start! This DVD is absolutely magical and captures Ween in the best of their live form, I've seen them 3 times and can attest to that. If you don't like this DVD then Ween isn't the band for you, if you're already a fan, then sit back and get ready for Gener and Deaner to blow your mind!
