Book Description

Moongobble and Me

In The Dragon of Doom, Moongooble successfully completes his first Mighty Task -- collecting the Golden Acorns of Alcoona. So now it's time for him to complete the second one. He must bring back a bottle containing the tears of the Weeping Werewolf! But werewolves are scary, dangerous creatures. How can Moongooble, a magician with a good heart but not much good at magic, collect the tears without being torn to shreds?

Luckily Edward, Fireball the dragon, and Urk, Moongobble's faithful toad, are all there to help him. Together, they go in search of the Weeping Werewolf and end up with much more than they bargained for!

Funny and suspenseful, spiced with Bruce Coville's special brand of wackiness and Katherine Coville's warm, witty illustrations, this book is sure to cast a spell of delight on beginning readers.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–In this second book in the series, young Edward and his friends must help Moongobble the Wizard complete the second Mighty Task so that he can become a member of the Society of Magicians. The boy, the wizard, the Rusty Knight, Urk the toad, and Fireball the dragon head into the forever-darkened Forest of the Night to bring home a bottle of the Weeping Werewolf's tears and make the shocking discovery that the creature is Edward's long-lost father. Now, in addition to fulfilling the task, they must also find a way to break the curse that has transformed the man into a monster and kept him from his family all these years. Coville presents an excellent picture of Edward's hopeful but uncertain reactions to finding the father he never knew. The author seamlessly weaves in issues of bullying (Edward is teased for not having a father and later feels guilty for taunting the werewolf) into the flow of his lighthearted fantasy. The charming graphite sketches are a perfect complement to the humorous prose. An excellent choice for fans of Kate McMullan's "Dragon Slayers' Academy" books (Grosset & Dunlap) and Tony Abbott's "The Secrets of Droon" series (Scholastic).–Jenna Miller, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

More About the Author

Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1950. His family lived in farm territory, about twenty miles north of Syracuse. Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, where he spent a great deal of time as a child, dodging cows and chores to the best of his ability. As a young reader he loved Mary Poppins and Dr. Dolittle, and still has fond memories of rising ahead of the rest of his family so he could huddle in a chair and read THE VOYAGES OF DR. DOLITTLE. He also read lots of things that people consider junk (Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and zillions of comic books). His only real regret is the time he spent watching television, when he could have been reading instead. (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!)

His first book, THE FOOLISH GIANT, was published in 1978. It was illustrated by his wife, Katherine, whom he had married in 1969. This was followed in 1979 by SARAH'S UNICORN, also illustrated by Katherine. After a long period of working separately, the Covilles began collaborating again with SPACE BRAT and GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE, both published in 1992.

Before getting published Bruce earned his living as a toymaker, a gravedigger, a cookware salesman, an assembly line worker, and finally as an elementary school teacher (second and fourth grades). He left teaching in 1981 to devote himself to becoming a full time writer - though it took another five years to achieve that goal!)

Bruce has published nearly 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN, INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, and THE MONSTER'S RING. In 2001 he founded Full Cast Audio, an audiobook company dedicated to creating unabridged, full cast recordings of the best in children's and young adult literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars More excellence from Bruce Coville, December 6, 2005
The Moongobble books, while at a 9 YO reading independent reading level, are fine fare for the 5 and 6 YO set who enjoy a good solid story time. The ideas are simple while the vocabulary leaps just enough ahead to make 'em reach. Great stories, great vocabulary and excellent illustrations make these fine gifts for small kids who love to be read to, and bigger kids who love to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Official..My Son Is Hooked On This Series, January 25, 2010
By
Tara Misu "Sandy" (Bryan, TX United States) - See all my reviews
After reading this book with me, my son (he's almost 6)got out of bed and grabbed the next one and handed it over for me to start reading. He was visibly upset that he was handing me Book Three (the third Great Task of three) and was very happy to hear that the series continued on after that.
I was impressed by the casual morality of this book. It was not heavy-handed at all, but simply showed that you should always do the right thing, nit for personal gain, but because it *is* the right thing. There is a moment when all Moongobble's hard work is set to go down the drain (or in this case, poured over the head of someone) and he is sad, but makes the choice to help someone at the expense of finishing his goal. My son was particularly affected by this moment. He told him not to do it. He was demonstrably upset he had done so. And it became a beautiful teaching moment on what was most important in life.
It did everything a good book should do. What parent could want more than that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner in the Moongobble series, November 29, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Weeping Werewolf (Moongobble and Me) (Hardcover)
My 5 and 6 year old boys liked this even more than The Dragon of Doom. As I read it to them, they laughed out loud at Moongobble's magical failures and particularly his curses, "Dad rat monkey fat!" There are many engaging illustrations, although I always wish for more in a book like this. Particularly recommended to younger readers who aren't yet ready for Spiderwick. Can't wait for the Evil Elves!
