Book Description

Elite June 24, 2004
The German Stahlhelm is perhaps the most recognizable image of World War II (1939-1945). Manufactured in its millions, it was used or copied by many countries. It is still one of the most collected relics of the war; but despite its relative availability, prices have reached levels that challenge collectors to protect themselves by acquiring in-depth knowledge. This book, by a collector of 30 years' standing, offers a detailed masterclass in the patterns, component parts and finishes of the combat helmets used by the German Army, Navy and Air Force. It is illustrated with a superb selection of rare period photos, colour photos of collected examples, and striking colour paintings.

3.0 out of 5 stars lacking substance, October 13, 2008
This review is from: Wehrmacht Combat Helmets 1933-45 (Elite) (Paperback)
This book would be a good buy at $4.95 It needs to show us comparisons (side by side)of real and repos. It should show where to look for stampings and inspection marks. I was looking for more detailed info.

This review is from: Wehrmacht Combat Helmets 1933-45 (Elite) (Paperback)
The book deals with the development, construction and historical significance of the various German helmets produced and used during Third Reich period between 1933 and 1945.

Although condensed in comparison to several other highly detailed monographs on the subject, I found the content exceptionally interesting and well written with enough details to please but the most discerning reader. The text is pocketed with images depicting the various types of helmets worn by the combat services and the pictures are detailed enough to discern the subtle differences between differing helmets models. Towards the center of the book are several pages that show colour plates. A small section on various decals used on the helmets is also included, as is a section on helmet liners, their construction and major differences. Of particular interest is the section dealing with camouflage and methods used to paint and weather the helmets.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend this text to anyone interested in this field. For the price, it is worthy of a place in the bookcase.
