Weight lifting wrist hooks,
By
This review is from: Weight Lifting Hooks Exercise Hook NEW Aluminum Hook (Misc.)
I ordered these because I have arthritis in my wrist and hands and have trouble gripping various weight lifting equipment. I have now used them several times and they work really well for most of the things I intended to use them for. The only problem is that I have very small wrists and I can't fasten the velcro strap quite far enough for how I think it's supposed to work. I got around this problem by wearing 1 inch sweatbands on each wrist under the strap. This allows me to tighten the strap enough to feel like it's not going to come off. This product lets me lift heavier weights than before when the weight would put too much stain on my wrist bones. I am 50 years old and have been weight-training for about 1 1/2 years and am finally about to move past my wrist limitations and make further progress. I am working on accomplishing my first pull-up and these will help with that when I get a little further along in the technique process. The issue with this product is that the hooks have a swivel joint connection to the strap which allows swing from hanging bars which is not always desirable. For lifting weights like dumbbells or barbells from a lower than waist height, they are an excellent tool. Once I don't have to jump up to a pull-up position and then let myself down, these will be helpful then. Right now, if I jump up to the pull-up bar and let myself down, I swing too much. My trainer thinks they're great for me (he has tried them too) and sees them as a real asset to my training. I gave them four stars for not indicating that they might not fit small wrists and for not mentioning the swing factor. They are well-padded and comfortable as described and I do see them as a great advantage overall.

These hooks are great for people who want to lift heavy weights without putting undue strain on their wrists. There are similar products on the market, but APT seems to be the only company which makes them in a matched pair for left and right hands. This means the wrist strap can easily be pulled tight using the opposite hand, and the buckle on each hook is worn on the outward part of the hand (away from the thumb area). Having a buckle in the thumb area can be uncomfortable, and can even cause injury. These hooks are lighter than others because they're made of aluminum, yet they're very strong. The fabric used is thicker and tougher than that of other manufacturers' products, and has ample padding. My only complaint is that the matal edges cut into the fabric over time. This is what wore out my last pair, and why I rated these as four stars instead of five. For my replacement pair, I gently smoothed the edges using a small round file. I expect my new pair to last many years. This is important to me, partly because APT has depleted their stock of hooks and hasn't replenished them for a very long time. There is debate whether to use hooks or straps for wrist support. I find hooks more reliable and definitely easier to use. I've been weight lifting for over twenty years; at age 55, my grip isn't what it used to be. Much of my weightlifting routine is performed on machines using varying weights over multiple sets. Strapping and unstrapping is inconvenient and time-consuming. I want to get the most benefit from my workouts in the least amount of time, and hooks help me to do that. In my opinion, the only drawback to using hooks is remembering you have a piece of metal in your hand. While wiping sweat from my forehead, I hit myself several times before learning to be more careful when wearing them!
