This book will make you laughing out loud. But that's not what I like most.

Best of all: it's practical and accurate.

On page after page, Kirchhoff explains human nature and how behavior change works. You will find many nuggets that will enhance your life.

As a behavior psychologist who teaches at Stanford University, I get frustrated when authors perpetuate myths about human behavior. But Kirchhoff gets it right. And that's why I like this book.

Dave's book is brutally honest and gets to the heart of the issues some of us struggle with regarding weight loss. He gives specific advice backed by research and a lot of his personal knowledge after working for Weight Watchers for many years. This book has given me hope and practical advice on how I can not only lose the weight I have struggled to lose for years but also honesty about how it is a life-long journey and not a diet. It is entertaining to read and is peppered with success stories from other people who have lost weight and kept it off.

I've joined Weight Watchers twice - once in 2005, and again in 2012. After losing 50 lbs by 2006, I felt like I knew the program and could do it on my own. Unfortunately, knowing the program isn't the only key, as Mr. Kirchhoff states in this book - it's changing your mind and your behavior. I didn't change those things, and the weight stopped coming off. I re-joined this year to shed the remaining weight FOR GOOD. David Kirchhoff is a huge encouragement, in that he's been there, a few times, AND he's the CEO of Weight Watchers. He didn't do it perfectly from day one, and readily admits it and explains why. He's the real deal!! Thanks to Mr. Kirchhoff for being transparent, and for spurring us on to achieve our goals!

UPDATE July 11, 2015. Recently, I gave this book a poor review due to what I believed to be sloppy ghostwriting. However, I was wrong. The author, David Kirchhoff, just clued me in. I am sorry for my mistake, and am giving the book the rating I believe it deserves.

Here is my original review:
David Kirchhoff is the CEO of Weight Watchers, and this book is about his journey to lose weight and maintain the loss. He's very down-to-earth, his writing voice is entertaining, and the book includes lots of helpful tips and motivating anecdotes and strategies. For example, I used his idea to move the ice cream out to the garage freezer, and then I buried it under a ton of stuff. If I go get it, I'll have time to think about what I'm doing as I dig it out.

Kirchhoff is funny. As he lists the rewards of eating right and exercising regularly, he says, "Truthfully, I look better as a fit guy than as my heavier self. There, I said it. I'm so vain, I probably think this book is about me..."

I'm a Lifetime member, but even though I probably lost the least weight of anybody with the right to claim that title (20 pounds), it's a constant struggle. I worry about regaining it, so this book helped me feel stronger. I am much happier at this lower weight, and I want to keep it off. The cool thing about WW is that they treat it like a lifetime deal, an interesting and empowering area of self-study, like learning mindfulness, say, or meditation. There's no judgement, just a recognition that, as Kirchhoff says, "I feel better physically and mentally when I eat right and don't stuff myself, and when I am getting regular exercise." It's as simple and as hard as that.

I'm glad I read the book.

I have done so much research on dieting over the past five years. I have been on countless diets that work in the short term but something stupid will make me give up on the diet, I go back to the way of eating that made me fat to begin with, and I gain all the weight back. I am sure that sounds familiar to a lot of people. This book seems to have changed that. This book made me realize a few things that no other book has ever made me realize:

1) There is no end game when it comes to weight loss. Once the weight is lost maintaining the weight loss takes just as much effort. As soon as you go back to your old ways of eating you will gain the weight back and probably more. You can never give up.

2) Just because you have a bad day for eating, or even a bad week or month, it is not going to kill you. You just need to get back on the horse and keep going. Basically never give up. Once you give up, you lose.

Not only did I find this book extremely profound, but I also found it entertaining. It is written by the CEO of weight watchers, and he does talk about weight watchers a decent amount, but he certainly does not push the program on you. He even says that there are lots of ways to lose weight that are effective and weight watchers isn't necessary. That was a big plus for me as I am not really a huge fan of weight watchers.

But really, the big difference about this book, was that it was written by someone that seems to struggle with their eating every day as they just maintain weight. Every other dieting book seems to focus on the weight loss part of it without really touching on how to maintain that weight loss. He talks about how he still will binge on things when he isn't supposed to, but he never gives up. This book honestly changed my life. I can't recommend it enough.
