Even though it costs a good bit more than this book, I absolutely love Mr. Mateljan's book entitled The World's Healthiest Foods. This one with the weight loss emphasis is largely a repeat of things in the larger, much better book. I am obese, but not morbidly so, therefore I bought this book hoping for some extra help with weight loss issues. Other than some testimonials, it adds nothing new to the discussion as far as I'm concerned. So if you can, spring for the big one. I hope this helps.

George's latest book<Weight Loss Success without Dieting, is inspired by letters he received from many visitors to his .org website, the World's Healthiest Foods (whfoods.org). These are real people, hundreds of them, who discovered an unexpected side-effect of eating healthy -- losing weight, lots of it, with no hunger, no boredom, no feelings of deprivation. And they did this eating real food, lots of real food -- not the prepackaged, chemicalized, miniscule portions of food you get from the diet plans that offer to help you lose weight by restricting your every calorie and delivering your meals in little, but expensive, microwavable boxes. George's dietary plan is one that you can live, really live with --for the rest of your life. And not only will it make you lean, but vibrantly healthy.
Once you understand why -- which George explains in much science-backed but easy to understand detail in Weight Loss Success -- it makes total sense. The basic concept is "nutrient-density". Nutrient-dense foods are those that deliver the richest concentration of the nutrients we need for a robust metabolism for the least amount of calories. If the foods you eat are nutrient-dense, you can enjoy plenty of them and will still effortlessly lose excess weight (and feel and look terrific). The only potential roadblocks here are figuring out which are the most nutrient-dense foods and finding ways to prepare them that make you actually want to eat them because they taste really good. Oh, and you also want to be able to do this in a really short amount of time -- comparable to waiting for that stuff in the box to heat up in the microwave.

I bought this after becoming interested in Mateljan's website on the world's healthiest foods. I'm finding that the book, like his site, uses common-sense approaches to food choices and preparation.

After a few weeks of eating the world's healthiest food, it strikes me that it's just so obvious: eat the food that has the most nutritional value per calorie. Duh, right? My way of tricking myself into eating it at first was to say, "I can have all the processed, high-sugar food I want AFTER I'm finished with my allotment of nutrient-dense food." Well, of course, after the nutrient-dense food, I simply wasn't hungry for the other stuff. And now, three weeks in, the food I used to eat is too sweet, too dense, too greasy for my taste.

This is a great introduction to using the world's healthiest food to lose weight. I'd recommend supplementing it with the author's (free) website after you've tried it for a few weeks.

It was definitely difficult to switch over from the standard American diet (mine was even worse since my mother passed away in December; eating TONS of "comfort" foods to help with the pain), but when I saw myself in photos from a recent event that I attended, I was shocked with the reality of my situation. It's so easy to be in denial about one's weight. "I'm not that bad" used to be my mantra. Well, it was that bad. With summer rapidly approaching and aches and pains that I knew were signs of my body telling me that enough was enough, I finally made the commitment to change my life.

For years I have subscribed to George's weekly newsletter and daily recipes, so when I saw that he had published a book specifically targeted at weight loss, I had to check it out. It has been the best thing for me. At first it's a lot of work: making grocery lists, prepping all the food and then cooking it. It was challenging, but after a few days, I got the hang of it. It's been nearly 3 weeks since I've been on this "diet" and I've already lost 5 pounds. I have more energy. I finally feel clear-headed and able to take on tasks that used to overwhelm me just at the thought of them. I also added lunchtime walks while at work. Some days I walk 3 miles within the hour and I feel great. I can't always walk during work, so when I can't, I make sure to get in some other type of physical activity to make up for it. I'm certain that I would have lost even more weight by now if I had stepped up my exercise routine.

The book has quite a few recipes, but many more on his website ([...]). He has created a new way of cooking vegetables so that they retain their vital nutrients as well as make them taste great!
