I ordered the 3-pound Acu-hoop, based upon the recommendation of a member of an online forum that I frequent. She swore that she had lost inches from her midsection in a short time by using the hoop, and as I'm wanting to also firm that part of myself before swimsuit season, I decided to order one for myself. I was a bit leary at first, because (as others have stated), I couldn't hula-hoop as a kid to save my life. I wasn't sure how on earth I was going to get a 3-pound hoop to go 'round and 'round, but the first time I tried it, after a few fumbles, I was hooping! Yes, this thing was actually spinning around my body! There is something about the weighted hoop that makes it infinitely easier to use than a regular child's hula-hoop.
After my initial session (I managed to do 3 or 4 minutes the first time), I was sore. And the soreness did increase over the next few days. I also had some minimal bruising on my hipbone -- this is not uncommon, and it WILL go away. The bruising is something to be worked through, not a point at which you simply give up. It did help me somewhat to purchase a padded neoprene belt (from a local sporting goods store), but I only needed it for a couple of days. I'm into my third week of consistent hooping as of this review, and I am absolutely loving it! While I can't say that I have a washboard midsection (yet!), I can attest that my muscles are feeling firmer, and I am starting to see a little more definition in my abs. I'm now up to between 15 and 20 minutes daily. (It's great to watch tv while doing this -- really makes the time fly by!) I'm no longer sore after a workout, but during my hooping sessions I can definitely feel my muscles working!
Be aware that you do need adequate space in which to do a hooping workout. My house is pretty small, and I have to shuffle a couple of smaller furniture items around a bit in order to make room for me and the swinging hoop. I really like the fact that the hoop breaks down easily, thereby eliminating my excuses for working out while traveling. It was also very easy to put together, and is sturdy. I haven't had it just break apart on its own, as I read from another reviewer here.
All in all, this is one of the most FUN workout devices I've tried. And it's so simple. Even if you think you can't hula hoop, because you couldn't in your younger years (neither could I -- not at ALL!), don't shy away from the Acu-hoop. It really is different. Keep trying until you find your rhythym, and you'll be happy that you stuck with it!
