5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN way to a firmer midsection!
I ordered the 3-pound Acu-hoop, based upon the recommendation of a member of an online forum that I frequent. She swore that she had lost inches from her midsection in a short time by using the hoop, and as I'm wanting to also firm that part of myself before swimsuit season, I decided to order one for myself. I was a bit leary at first, because (as others have stated),...

1.0 out of 5 stars This HURTS
I have to agree with the reviewers here and on other sites who have stated they couldn't use this hoop because it hurts and leaves bruises. I lasted less than a minute with this thing before the pain was too much, my daughter lasted about 10 seconds. Having it weight four pounds, and having an uneven surface on the inside means that you're going to get four pounds plus...

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN way to a firmer midsection!, April 20, 2009
This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
I was a bit leary at first, because (as others have stated), I couldn't hula-hoop as a kid to save my life. I wasn't sure how on earth I was going to get a 3-pound hoop to go 'round and 'round, but the first time I tried it, after a few fumbles, I was hooping! Yes, this thing was actually spinning around my body! There is something about the weighted hoop that makes it infinitely easier to use than a regular child's hula-hoop.

After my initial session (I managed to do 3 or 4 minutes the first time), I was sore. And the soreness did increase over the next few days. I also had some minimal bruising on my hipbone -- this is not uncommon, and it WILL go away. The bruising is something to be worked through, not a point at which you simply give up. It did help me somewhat to purchase a padded neoprene belt (from a local sporting goods store), but I only needed it for a couple of days. I'm into my third week of consistent hooping as of this review, and I am absolutely loving it! While I can't say that I have a washboard midsection (yet!), I can attest that my muscles are feeling firmer, and I am starting to see a little more definition in my abs. I'm now up to between 15 and 20 minutes daily. (It's great to watch tv while doing this -- really makes the time fly by!) I'm no longer sore after a workout, but during my hooping sessions I can definitely feel my muscles working!

Be aware that you do need adequate space in which to do a hooping workout. My house is pretty small, and I have to shuffle a couple of smaller furniture items around a bit in order to make room for me and the swinging hoop. I really like the fact that the hoop breaks down easily, thereby eliminating my excuses for working out while traveling. It was also very easy to put together, and is sturdy. I haven't had it just break apart on its own, as I read from another reviewer here.

All in all, this is one of the most FUN workout devices I've tried. And it's so simple. Even if you think you can't hula hoop, because you couldn't in your younger years (neither could I -- not at ALL!), don't shy away from the Acu-hoop. It really is different. Keep trying until you find your rhythym, and you'll be happy that you stuck with it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to workout in front of TV, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
I have a 4 lb hula hoop and you should know that the first couple of days it will hurt to use this. It feels like someone is punching you in the stomach (I guess it means that it's working). After that you will get used to it. You have to be very good at hula hooping a regular one, as it will take all your abdominal muscles to hold on to it. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love my 3 lb acu hoop, April 28, 2009
This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
When I first began using my weighted hoop, I bruised very badly around my hip bones. It was very painful, but I did not want to give up. I went to Walmart and bought a "weight loss belt" in their sporting section. Basically, it is a light rubber belt that velcroes around my waist and hip area. It works great - no more bruising. I hoop most days for 10 min. and about everyother day, I do Leslie Sansome's Ab Shortcuts DVD. I don't have "ripped" abs, but my stomach is very firm and I have nice oblique definition. *Since hooping, I have lost an inch off my waist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Exercise For Adults, April 12, 2009

This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
I watch the kids on the playground at work playing with the hula hoops and really wanted to try it again as an adult. I read the reviews and people said they liked the weighted ones but they hurt their stomachs. After receiving mine,(4 lbs.), I only did it for the 1 - 2 minutes they suggested and it did hurt my stomach. But it only hurt for about 24 hrs. The next time I tried it, it hurt less. I really enjoy the weighted hula hoop as an adult and it's a fun way to exercise. Once your muscles get used to it, it's not a problem.

FINALLY! An exercise I actually look forward to, and therefore easily stick with. And it's far cheaper, more fun, and more convenient than a gym. And I lost 3 lbs my first week or so.

I am a 63-year-old female, 50 pounds overweight, and hadn't engaged in any sustained physical activity in years. Been using the hoop about 8-10 days now. Being so out of condition, I still tire quickly, so each of my sessions last only about 2 minutes. And the hoop still produces dramatic results. (I do 2 to 4 sessions a day, over a period of about 8-9 hours)

* After my first few attempts, on 3 consecutive days, I was able to actually "hoop," keeping the hoop up around my waist. Even before I achieved any degree of success, I was having fun, and experienced very minimal & painless bruising in the beginning.

* From the very first attempt, I felt energized, and that energy increases as I make hooping progress. I'm off coffee!

* Because of the energy I derive from hooping, I've been able to easily resume other forms of exercise: walk briskly for 1-2 hours daily; work with free weights as I watch TV.

I like that there's no special clothing, shoes, equipment, or preparation necessary. I get out of bed and immediately get to hooping while still in my nightgown. It's a quick waker-upper that gets my day off to a good, productive start.

Throughout the day, when I start to drag, I spontaneously start hooping and I'm energized again. I hoop two to four times a day, whether I feel weary or not. All this has naturally decreased my appetite.

Hoop was easy to assemble; no special tools or tricks required. And I had no problems with respect to the hoop's coming apart. And I love the bright colors; they lift my mood.

As with any exercise, this method might not be for everyone. I suggest that before ordering the hoop, you test your ability to gyrate, simulating movements you'd be making with the Hula Hoop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hula Hoop easy and fun, February 1, 2009
This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
I purchased the 2 pound hula hoop because of the reviews of the 4 pound hula hoop leaving bruises and hurting people upon first use. I just do it twice a day instead of once a day; and I found that using a back support belt while hula hooping keeps it from hurting me.

I wouldn't recommend wearing thin yoga type of outfits when doing this. I wear a sweatshirt jacket and end up taking it off about 8 minutes into it. It adds to the padding to protect from bruising.

I lasted less than a minute with this thing before the pain was too much, my daughter lasted about 10 seconds. Having it weight four pounds, and having an uneven surface on the inside means that you're going to get four pounds plus momentum slamming into you each time the hoop makes contact with your body - ouch. Wish I had thought of that before I made the purchased. :-)

Like the other reviewers said, yeah it hurts for the first couple of days. But then it gradually goes away, and it does work! I definitely feel tighter, and slimmer around my waist. If the pain is too unbearable, try wearing thicker clothes at first until your body adjusts. I love the Hula Hoop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive and fun - don't let initial soreness stop you!, October 30, 2009

This review is from: Weighted Sports Hula Hoop for weight loss - Acu Hoop 4M - 4 lb. medium (Sports)
When I first tried this, it hurt! Just do it a few minutes and then skip a day, then do a few more, skip a day, etc. It is awesome and no soreness anymore (only took a few days to get over)! I was not a hoola-hooper as a kid - I'm not coordinated well, plus kids hoola-hoops are too light! But, it is easy to learn how to hoop and it just takes practice. My jeans already feel looser around my waist. I'm not trying to lose a lot of weight, but I would like to firm up my waistline!

I've had this about a month, and I'm not sure that's it's actually helped trim me down, but I do feel a tightening of muscles on my torso so I continue to use it. Do be careful though and follow the instructions on use. You can have some mild bruising as it is weighted. This ain't your mother's hula hoop.

Delivery was 2-3 days faster than promised which was great.
