Book Description

August 1, 2011
There's a wave of body dissatisfaction sweeping across society. While bookstore shelves are well-stocked with tomes on how to overcome body image problems, very few take a faith-based, much less Catholic, approach to self-healing. Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body speaks not only to those who may have faced an eating disorder, but also to anyone who wants to live an abundant life, unencumbered by our culture's obsession with thinness, physical beauty, youth, or food.

Editorial Reviews

Review

With striking honesty and a sincerity that shows the beauty of her soul, Kate Wicker's words in Weightless point readers to the true formula for health of body, mind, and spirit. By sharing her own story, Kate has created a resource that will support and uplift women of any age, vocation, or station in life. --Lisa M. Hendey, author, The Handbook for Catholic Moms

Rare is the family that is untouched by negative body image, whether it's just the longing to lose a few pounds or a full-fledged eating disorder. With honesty and candor, Kate Wicker's book is a valuable tool in reclaiming femininity and authentic beauty for ourselves and our daughters. --Elizabeth Foss, author, Small Steps for Catholic Moms and Real Learning

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this book July 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
If you are a woman, if you love a woman, if you parent a little girl who will one day be a woman, this is a vitally important book for you. Rare is the family that is untouched by negative body image, whether it's just the longing to lose a few pounds or a full-fledged eating disorder. Women--and even very little girls-- today are bombarded by messages that they are not beautiful enough. "Look younger! Look thinner! Just don't look like you, because you aren't good enough!" With honesty and candor, Kate Wicker takes a thoughtful, prayerful look at those messages. She counters the voices of society and, frankly, the voices in our own heads, with wisdom from the Church and the healing words of God. I wholeheartedly recommend this book as a valuable tool in reclaiming femininity and authentic beauty for ourselves and our daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much, much more than another self-help book! August 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a woman who suffered with an eating disorder for much of my life, I have mostly avoided the topic. I simply didn't want to face the truth of my inner turmoil. However, through reading Kate Wicker's Weightless and finding much in common with the internal struggles regarding her own eating disordered past, I found comfort and hope. Much like Kate, my faith saved me, before I even knew I believed in God. I stopped abusing and berating my body while pregnant with my first child in 2004. Though I had gained enough weight to look healthy prior to my pregnancy, my thoughts about my body were anything but healthy. While carrying the miracle of life, I saw beauty in my newly rounded, heavier self and for the first time understood that beauty is truly more than skin deep. Kate does an amazing job of sharing her own struggles and providing real life, achievable ways to be inspired, uplifted and healed.

I love Kate's theme of making peace with our bodies because it admits that we are going to see flaws with our appearance and we are going to be forced to compare ourselves to professional models and actresses simply because of the culture in which we live, but that we have a choice. We can choose to battle the mirror, knowing full well that it is a losing battle and a very vain one at that. Or we can choose to concentrate on the beauty of our bodies, their amazing ability to move us through this life and produce life. We can choose to model true beauty for our children (I have three girls) by actually believing that what makes us beautiful is how we treat others and love one another.

Kate touches on every topic that women think about but might not openly share with her friends or husband, such as our spiritual hunger, projecting our own insecurities onto our daughters, aging and much more.

I encourage every woman, whether of faith or simply struggling with body image issues to pick up this book and read it. You will find a friend and confidant in Kate Wicker. You will nod your head up and down the entire way through and you will find wonderful, insightful questions and resources to help you make peace with your body.
