Book Description

December 20, 2005
Weight training is one of the fastest, most effective ways to lose fat, improve muscle tone, and strengthen bones. It also helps guard against osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. Weights for 50+ shows how easy it is for anyone — at any age — to get started with weights. It teaches exercises that are suited to varying ages and degrees of strength, including super-easy, easy, intermediate, and advanced.

The program in Weights for 50+ focuses on the use of small free weights (starting at just 3 lbs.), and includes stretches and release moves — everything readers need to design a personalized weekly exercise plan. Weights for 50+ also describes proper training methods and explains how to achieve specific goals by varying the workout and carefully monitoring the number of repetitions. Last but not least, the author shows how to have fun and enjoy a workout for staying young.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great instruction, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Weights for 50+: Building Strength, Staying Healthy and Enjoying an Active Lifestyle (Paperback)
I bought this book for my husband who just turned 60 this spring. He is no stranger to working out, especially since he was in the army many years ago. He was very fit and muscular and is a mechanic by trade so he is also very strong. He has also never had a problem with being overweight. A few years ago, he was very sick and lost a tremendous amount of muscle mass. Since we already had free weights here at home and exercise bands, this book seemed appropriate. When I gave it to him, he jumped right in and started using some of the exercises. There has been a marked improvement in both his muscle tone and mass. I catch him studying the pages to find yet another exercise that will improve "his guns". Since he is not a "gym" person this has been a godsend. His posture is improving as well as his confidence. He stated that he looks forward to the day when he will no longer look like a shriveled up old man. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars This book hits all the body parts!, September 23, 2010
This review is from: Weights for 50+: Building Strength, Staying Healthy and Enjoying an Active Lifestyle (Paperback)
We love all of Dr Knopf's books. This is one of the best. Weight's For 50 takes you through motions, angles, reps, progressions of exercise and gives you the reasons to change your old habits, if you have even established habits at all. Within two months (or less), you will be on track and living healthy. If you have recovery issues, WF50+ will help you focus towards healing and resolution. Do not buy other authors who happen to publish books for college kids, then reword the text for the 50+ crowd. Dr Knopf has a long history and long list of success at his university, his studios and with the groups of adults he actually works with every single day. Dr Knopf provides a realistic hands-on approach, which is so much better than other authors and books who really do not care to serve the 50+ exercise crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for people over 50 with health problems, December 30, 2010

This review is from: Weights for 50+: Building Strength, Staying Healthy and Enjoying an Active Lifestyle (Paperback)
This was a gift for my boyfriends mother. She recently started lifting weights to help her osteoporosis. She had a trainer that she loved but he was let go when two health clubs merged. Her new trainer told her the other trainer was teaching her wrong and suggested she do different things. She told me there is an osteoporosis section in the book and it said if you have osteoporosis you should not push weight directly over your head or do any exercise that makes your body twist. This new trainer was having her do both. So it sounds as if this was a great Christmas gift for her and she is learning a lot. She said there are sections in the book specifically for other health problems as well.
