Very entertaining clips but could use DVD features better, October 2, 1999

This review is from: Weird Al Yankovic: The Videos (DVD)
Weird Al makes some great music video parodies. I recommend that you view the original clips before seeing the parodies, and you'll appreciate his greatness. The only one I had was "Beat It" on VideoCD (sadly, Bad wasn't on the same VCD), and even though I enjoyed "Eat It" when I first viewed it, I enjoyed it even more after I saw the original clip. Al's original songs may be even better than his parodies. They are more serious, in a silly way (I find it difficult to really describe this quality). They really grew on me. I've seen the clips many times, and I'm not tired of them yet. My only gripes with this title are with its usage of the DVD format. It provides the basics - the ability to select the clip to view - but that's it. I'd have liked to see a better menu (one that doesn't force you to skip 3 pages to get to one of the later clips), lyrics as subtitles (the optional subtitles are one of the best features of DVD for music videos, IMO), and extra features, such as info about Al, his works, and the clips. There certainly isn't a problem with space on that DVD - another 2GB could easily be fitted on it without even going to double layer.

Ugh, November 13, 2000
This review is from: Weird Al Yankovic: The Videos (DVD)
Let's put aside how clever and hilarious Al Yankovic is, because chances are if you're here reading this review you probably already love the guy. In a nutshell. . . this DVD is pretty ugly. It's one of the lowest-quality transfers I've seen yet. It ranks way down there with Monty Python and the Holy Grail in picture clarity, but it's unacceptable here because some of the source material is only a couple years old. I would only complain about it if it detracted from the overall experience, and it most certainly does. Not that the DVD is ruined or anything. The disc contains most of Al's best work, and actually seeing the music videos makes listening to his songs much more worthwhile. I only wish they had polished the final product a little more. This thing is so bad, it plays exactly like a CD--pop it in, push play, and it immediately starts playing the videos, one after another, with not a thing between. I would have liked to see some behind the scenes stuff, or even some informative text! But there's nothing. It's disappointing when a DVD has so much potential, but the producers don't even tap into the power of the DVD format.

AS FUN AS A HUNDRED "HARVEY THE WONDER HAMSTERS", June 16, 1999
This review is from: Weird Al Yankovic: The Videos (DVD)
This video is very entertaining and contains a few videos that I had forgotten as well as a few I didn't even know existed. I had forgotten "Christmas at ground zero" and didn't know there was a video to "Jurassic Park". This is a MUST for any fan of the demented musician. There are more than twenty videos with such favorites as: "Fat", "UHF",and "Like a Surgeon". Also included are some of the lesser known tunes like:"You Don't Love Me Anymore", "Gump", and "One More Minute". Some of the videos have guest stars like Florence Henderson, Pat Boone, Ruth Buzzi, Dick Van Patten, and, of course, Dr. Demento; the man that helped make Al the famous man he is today. I only wish Al would make a video to every song. Well, every song except that one...
