More About the Author

I was born a poor, freckled child. Now I write books about strange creatures, things and people, and sometimes illustrate them, to boot.

This is exactly what I told my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Ione Kopitzke, I wanted to do when I grew up. I remember she replied, almost crying, "Oh Linda, I think you can do better than that." Her picture is now in the front of my book, "Strange Wisconsin: More Badger State Weirdness." Right next to freckled little me in my "L" initial blouse. That book won a bronze medal in the Independent Publishers 2008 Best Book Awards, and a Midwest Book Review's Editor's Choice. See how neatly life shakes out sometimes?

Before I started writing books, I received an art education degree from UW-Oshkosh, taught art and was a cartoonist and newspaper reporter. I live in southeast Wisconsin with my husband, youngest son and Lhasa Apso named Grendel.

You might catch me on an episode or two of HC's Monster Quest and other TV and radio shows. Check out beastofbrayroad.com for updates.

Do you like stories about strange phenomena, ghost stories, or stories that simply tingle your spine? How about stories about strange places that exist? Perhaps you are the type of person who is interested in UFO's. What about stories about interesting persons who have their own stories to share? What if I could tell you that this book is all of that and more?

Who would think of a fairly quiet place like Wisconsin as being a state full of weirdness!? Everything from UFO's and ghosts to the world's largest, well, urinal, this book covers it all.

It is very hard to put this book down once you begin to read it, and after reading it, I still find it hard to put the book down! Each story in this book is priceless, and the authors made sure that the book was very reader-friendly.

The only problem I had was that I couldn't rate this book any higher than 5 stars.

This is a slickly and well produced book that deals with oddities and mysteries and general strangeness around the state. General areas covered include local legends, ancient mysteries, fables people and places, roadside oddities, unexplained stuff, reports of bizarre beasts, properties where the owners went somewhat overboard in decoration, cemeteries of note, and some ghost stories. Usually what you get are short blurbs on the topic to hand, and large photos of related stuff - in the case of roadside Americana (Wisconsiniana?), some quiet roads, and people's sculpture gardens you get photos of the actual subject. But not always.

I found the book to be pretty hit and miss. I enjoyed the ghost stories the most, and some of the tales of alleged unsolved murders. The roadside stuff I thought was okay, though some decent maps or better description of where to find this stuff would have been appropriate. For the rest, the local legends are mostly that, non-factual legends; the strange spotted beasts never existed; and a lot of 'unexplained phenomena' is either perfectly explainable (heavy alcohol intake) or not worth the trouble. There is an awful lot of hearsay and just general fiction shoved into the book, along with a good amount of padding of graphics not related to the subject. 'Some say' testimony, and anonymous email correspondence citing 'a friend told me' isn't really what I had hoped to be getting in this book.

On the whole, it is nice to page through, but I had hoped for a book that would get the reader on the road exploring the state, and this doesn't come close to doing that.

This was an amazing book, I'm planning on buying myself a copy since checking it out from the library. The only problem I had with it is they got a few addresses wrong. The truck in the tree in Clinton, WI... They say it's visible from interstate 90. I'm not good with road names but my dad is, an 84 native of rock county says it's no where near 90. In the picture it's obvious that they went buy the house, I know these people personally and they don't mind visitors so I'm confused as to why they didn't mention the road it's on.

I grew up in Wisconsin. In July, my sister and I were going back to visit and wanted to discover some of the oddities about our home state. The book is just not written the way one would expect. It's interesting as a coffee-table book maybe, or a book to read out of curiosity, but it is NOT good for someone who actually wants to go see these things. Maybe I'm just WEIRD, but I wish I hadn't spent money on this book.

Fun and interesting stuff about our state. My son's science teacher had this in his classroom and my son insisted we get it.
