I've owned two of these now and both have broken. The first one has an intermittent on-off switch and the second has had a failure in the spring that holds the head on tight.

I can't see how to disassemble them to fix either.

Most Welch Allyn stuff is much sturdier than this

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT! This Lithium Ion Welch Allyn item is overpriced plastic junk that will be completely disposable when the battery dies and only takes a partial charge or fails to take any charge. Works great for a while, but these batteries only last so many charges before failure. Then you have a $275 piece of trash.

I purchased this new when I started Medical School, and hardly used it until 3rd year. Battery failure in less than 4 years of usage and fewer than 50 charge cycles. Warranty? Battery only warranted for 2 years from date of manufacture, not the date of purchase! As seen in the paperwork that comes with it:
http://www.welchallyn.com/documents/EENT/Power%20Handles,%20Sources%20&%20Wall%20Units/Li%20-%20ION%20Handle/usermanual_20100514_lithiumhandle.pdf

Stick with Welch Allyn metal handles, then just replace the reasonably priced nickel cadmium battery inside.

It feels as if it needs careful handling or it might upset the handle. I am very careful when putting it for charge.

Many people say that this product is weak. However, I have used the same handle for over 5 years and I LOVE IT!!! It has never broken, the batteries last as long today as it did in the beginning, but I do let it run down before I charge it. I have never had a problem with it breaking. I now have 3 and we have 3 audiologists using them and all three of us love it. It is so much lighter in weight than the Nickel Cadmium battery. I won't ever go back.

Quite expensive for not much more than a battery. NiCad handle works as well or better and a more reasonably priced battery replacement.

I purchased this in 2010 from the local Welch Allyn Rep, not from Amazon. It worked great for a year, and then it began to lose its ability to hold a charge. If left plugged in it would run great for about 30 minutes of usage before dying out, even less if paired with the PanOptic. Ater just two years it would not hold a charge for even two days. In other words, unless I leave it plugged into the wall all the time it's always dead when I try to use and even if I leave it plugged in continuously I can only use it for about 5-10 patient exams before it dies out. This is junk. The old school silver ones that everyone uses still seem to be the best. But since I travel a lot I'm going to try and find one that takes alkaline batteries so that I don't have to keep it plugged in. Don't waste your money on this. But the old school silver one that has replaceable NiCad batteries, and get an extra battery with it. You'll be glad you did.
