Good device but yearly probe replacement required, September 23, 2008
As a physician who has used many electronic thermometers, this one is about the best and fastest. It stands up to abuse well as my nurse has dropped it numerous times and it still functions fine. My only complaint(and the reason why I gave 3 stars not 5) is that the probe needs to be replaced regularly. I spoke with an individual in customer support who stated the average probe lasts approximately one year, then needs to be replaced(an error message comes up, rendering the unit unusable). The probe replacement is ~$85. I think that if you spend this amount of money on a thermometer, you should get more than a years use out of it before having to replace expensive parts.

Finally, a Quick-Read Thermometer that Works, February 28, 2011
This review is from: Welch Allyn Suretemp Plus 690 Electronic Thermometer #01690-200 (Health and Beauty)
I have wasted a lot of money on inexpensive "instant-read" thermometers. I have found them all to be unreliable, giving wildly inconsistent readings. I consulted with a health practitioner, who recommended the Welch Allyn Suretemp Plus 690. It works. It gives consistent temperature readings. Wahoo! I was concerned by another review that indicated the thermometer wears out quickly, but I decided that pertained to a busy health care office environment, and would not be a concern for limited home use. Note the probe covers are required: without a cover, an artifically high temp is reported. Also, one must use the Welch Allyn brand of probe cover; they are specially made to fit the device.

Welch Allyn Suretemp Plus 690 Electronic Thermometer, March 25, 2009
This review is from: Welch Allyn Suretemp Plus 690 Electronic Thermometer #01690-200 (Health and Beauty)
The thermometer is really good once you get it working. I was not very happy that I bought it "Brand New" and when I tried to use it, didn't work. I had to ship the Thermometer Probe back, then waited for a week, then tried again and still wasn't working, so I ended having to ship back the Thermometer with all accesories. It took a few weeks to get it back and working. Welch Allyn however, were very good at keeping the guaranty and sending back to me the thermometer after it was fixed.
