Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When a large box labeled “Welcome to your AWESOME ROBOT” arrives at a girl’s home, her mother helps her open it and retrieve the only contents: a booklet of instructions. As it turns out, the empty box, upended and placed over the child’s head and body, is the robot—or it will be once a number of additions and alterations suggested in the manual are completed. Most of the right-hand pages reproduce instructions from the manual, while the facing pages show the child and her mother carrying them out in colorful, stylized cartoons complete with comments, banter, and conversations. The girl is serious and creative, while her mother is practical and supportive. Though a couple of illustrations suggest filling in the blanks and cutting out the pages, they could easily be copied instead. Inventive, amusing, and completely engaging, this large-format book shows kids how to turn a cardboard box into the robot of their dreams. Preschool-Grade 3. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

“Our favorite part is that after the book walks you through making a basic box robot, it encourages you to personalize your robot in wild and imaginative ways”.
—Washington Post

"A fantastic, inspiring read"
—Boing Boing

"It’s both a story and a manual, and it’s perfect for creating a project with a kid."
—Joy Corcoran

It was a great 'screen' free (ipad, computer, tv) family activity.
Lisa
The ideas and cartoon illustrations are great, and they both loved the way the book encouraged them over and over to come up with their own additions.

I got this for my son on his seventh birthday--he read the book several times before he was ready to build the robot.

We are 8 days into an at-home vacation and getting to the "Moooom, I'm boooooored..." part of things. Then this book was delivered which I'd forgotten I pre-ordered. Within 10 minutes of its arrival my kids (my son is 7.5, my daughter is 11.5) pulled all the cardboard boxes out of the recycling and disappeared into their "workshop" to start building robots. They were frustrated at first that we didn't have any boxes big enough for them to wear, but I suggested "mini-robots" for the meantime and they were satisfied with some that were cereal box-sized. Other than the occasional requests for more materials (packing tape, scissors, art supplies) I have not heard from them since, and it's been hours. They are fully engaged in creating, building, and problem-solving. They aren't even bickering. Best money I've spent all year.

Within five minutes of opening the package with Welcome to Your Awesome Robot my daughter and her friend were starting to cut up a box and make their robot. The instructions were easy to follow for eight year olds, and actually made a pretty cool robot costume.

My 9 year old daughter and 6 year old son could not wait to start work on their own robots after reading this book! It was a great 'screen' free (ipad, computer, tv) family activity.

The story is about a package coming in the mail in a big box. The box only has one small book in it with an instruction manual on how to build a robot.

It includes a lot of great ideas to get the kids imagination going on what features they want on their own cardboard human powered robot.

Not a bad book. Gave a cute back-line about building a robot from cardboard boxes. My 5-year-old daughter looked at it once, got the gist, and never looked back.

I got this for my son on his seventh birthday--he read the book several times before he was ready to build the robot. The book is entertaining and cute and just at the right reading level. Then we worked for a day building the robot--he was engaged and excited and still (a month later) has the robot in his closet and puts it on occasionally.

The humor in this book makes it enjoyable for kids AND responsible assistants...errr, adults.

Very great instruction manual for kids who probably don't need help converting a cardboard box into F.U.N.

For dull children, perhaps this will be an inspiration for them to put down the game console and... play?
