Ages 3^-6. Not many picture books incorporate computers into their stories, so it's pleasant to find one that features this everyday aspect of life. When the kids from Pokeweed Public return after the summer, their principal informs them that they are now a high-tech school with a computer lab, a new fire-alarm system, automatic locks, and a central computer that controls everything. The kids are shown learning the computers and using e-mail, but when a malfunction in the central computer sets off the sprinkler system during a fire drill and then locks the doors so no one can get back in, the principal realizes that a few bugs in the system need to be worked out. The shiny, polished art has the look of cartoons that have been air-brushed. The story also gets across the message that no matter what gizmos a building might have, the best part of school is the people--teachers and friends. Ilene Cooper
