This review is from: Welcome To Fat City (Vinyl)
This album is one of my all-time favorites, and it came out when I was only 10 years old. Sort of Folk, sort of Pop, sort of Country--it's hard to pigeonhole. It has some of the catchiest sing-along tunes as well as some thought provoking works. "Readjustment Blues" is one of the best songs about the Vietnam War ever written. The "Jesus Says Hello" tango is a look at the mentally ill that is perversely fun--it makes you want to dance around while you clean your house. Same goes for "Morning Says Hello". Enjoy the slow ballads on the album, and then take in the "Fat City High School Fight Song" for a chuckle (featuring the mantra "thank God for marijuana"..... Songs about the environment round out this look at what was going on during the era in which it was released. The vocals and harmonies are interesting and edgy. You get an extra kick when you realize that actors Susan and Chris Sarandon sing backup.
I haven't yet found a way to buy a digital version of this album, and if I could I would in a heartbeat. How about it, Bill Danoff--let me know when I can buy the CD or MP3. |
