5.0 out of 5 stars Magical... I believe!!!, October 25, 1999

This review is from: Welcome Comfort (Hardcover)
What can friendship, compassion and a little bit of magic do for a "substantially-built" foster child, teased relentlessly by his classmates? After meeting Mr. Hamp, the equally "substantial" school janitor, Welcome finds his life changed forever. Don't want to give away any details, but I wanted to buttonhole every child in the store and read it to them. Appealing to all ages. Makes your heart glow... like Santa!!! The illustrations are equally beautiful. Read it for yourself, read it to your children. It just might become a family tradition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Santa in our hearts, December 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome Comfort (Hardcover)
Wonderful, loving book that helps children see their actions through another's eyes! My students gasped with delight at the conclusion of the book. Many have been the victim of not being with the 'in crowd' at school. Through this book they have been given hope and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Holiday Tradition, December 15, 2004
This book has become a tradition in our family since it was inspired by grandparents Martha and Quinton Hamp, whom the author included as characters in the story. Our children love Ms. Polacco's beautiful artwork, warm-hearted characters and magical ending. Teachers love receiving this book as an addition to their classroom libraries, especially at the holidays. Highly recommended!

Welcome Comfort is a Christmas story as warm and endearing as the title suggests. Welcome Comfort is a boy who has a hard time at school, and life in general. He has a weight problem, and he has always lived in foster homes.

Then someone special comes into his life. Who is this someone special? Even Welcome doesn't know until he is an adult.

This story is about a small boy who seems to have the deck stacked against him, but his life turns out to be an amazing adventure, regardless. It's about caring, sharing, loving and living. It's about a young boy who keeps trucking along even when things are tough. It's a great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Comfort - A real Comfort, August 27, 2006
This review is from: Welcome Comfort (Hardcover)
This is one of the best Christmas stories I can read to my school children. It teaches them to be tolerant of others and keeps them guessing as to the outcome of the story. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Comfort... Welcome Christmas, December 9, 2009

This is a truly wonderful book by a consistently amazing author/illustrator. This is a simpler narrative than some of Polacco's other books and is suitable for younger students. A magical story about tolerance and generosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Magic, December 23, 2011
By
This review is from: Welcome Comfort (Mass Market Paperback)
Welcome Comfort by Patricia Polacco is an often-undiscovered gem of a Christmas story. I have no idea why this story isn't ten times as popular as The Polar Express, because it runs along the same lines, but is much more truly magical.

The story begins with the kind custodian at an elementary school, Quentin Hamp, hearing some children teasing a little boy who is new to the school. Welcome Comfort, already burdened with a name that makes him a target is also overweight, and has been bounced around from foster home to foster home. Mr. Hamp immediately takes the little boy under his wing, and builds the kind of relationship with him that you just wish every child like him could find in an adult.

Come Christmas time, Welcome tells Mr. Hamp that he doesn't believe in Santa, that "seeing is believing." With his gentle brand of optimism, Mr. Hamp sets out to teach Welcome that he has it backwards ... that in fact, "believing is seeing." From there, the story takes a turn into the life-changing magic of love and kindness throughout the life of a child whose future could have turned out quite differently.

After one exceedingly magical Christmas, Welcome's life is transformed. While he wakes from the night still not believing that Santa is real, he carries the lesson of "believing is seeing" throughout his life. I won't spoil the true secret of the book by revealing it here, I will say that I find it impossible to read through the entire story without crying -- every single time, which was always much to the delight of my students, and always resulted in a huge rush on the Patricia Polacco bin in my classroom library, and the shelf in the school's.

If you're looking for a new book for your Christmas collection, make sure to check out this one -- and I promise you won't be disappointed with any of her Christmas titles (and this is not the only one that makes me cry).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Non-Traditional Holiday Story, October 25, 2009
This review is from: Welcome Comfort (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the story of a foster child named Welcome Comfort. Welcome is a larger child who is constantly being teased by the children in his school. This books tells about his life and how he befriends the school janitor Mr. Hamp. From then on his life changes and he discovers one of the greatest secrets of Christmas. The pictures in the book do a great job of expressing the relationship between Welcome and Mr. Hamp. The spirit of Christmas and friendship shines brightly in this captivating children's book. What child would not love to meet Santa, let alone be him?
