5.0 out of 5 stars Very Welcoming
This slender volume proactively addresses the realities of intermarriage. It is neither too general nor too pedantic and serves as a perfect introduction to those who may be unfamiliar with Judaism. The copies I have given to my new in-laws have prompted many questions and discussions. My mother-in-law especially wanted to express her appreciation for Mrs. Shenker's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good place to start
My girlfriend, who is not jewish, was interested in learning more about the jewish religion and culture. I asked around and finally came up with this book. It was exactly what the rabbi ordered. Its a good mish mosh of yiddish, religous background, jewish kvetching and food recipes. Obviously, anyone who is looking to convert or just really investigate judaism, needs...

Its a good mish mosh of yiddish, religous background, jewish kvetching and food recipes. Obviously, anyone who is looking to convert or just really investigate judaism, needs more then a book, but this is excellent for anyone who needs to learn the basics or is just trying to refresh thier memory. I read it myself, and relearned a few things I had forgotten.

My wife and I have been married for 10 years now and we have 2 beautiful children. They have wonderful relationships with both sets of grandparents. My parents are Jewish and my wife's are not, as she converted to Judaism before the kids were born. This book has been invaluable to my in-laws and many others who are interested in our lives and how we have raised our kids to know who they are and from where they came.

Thanks Lois!

Knowing Lois is bashert, but to read her book is a blessing, and is especially helpful in introducing Judaism to your non-Jewish in-laws. Lois Shenker, with all the compassion of a Jewish Bubby, extends the traditional boundaries of what it is to be a family, in her book. 'Welcome to the Family...' explores both the unique differences and similarities of the Jewish faith. My husband and I enjoyed the years of Jewish education classes, lovingly taught by Lois, that we attended in Portland, OR. Her openness and support of our relationship paved the way to a beautiful marriage, and now we have an even more beautiful baby boy. Thanks Lois for all your support through the years

In 1999 I began the process which led to my conversion to the Jewish faith, and Mrs. Shenker was one of my mentors during this process. She coordinated the "Introduction to Judaism" course in Portland, Oregon, and proved to be an invluable teacher. Lois shares her wisdom in "Welcome to the Family," a compact yet informative guide to Judaism and Jewish customs. "Welcome to the Family" is mainly aimed at those who are not familiar with Judiasm, and answers many questions on Jewish customs, rituals, and faith.
