Diverse dancefloor industrial,

Don't judge this book by its cover. The simple, cheap artwork suggests old school techno or maybe Nitzer Ebb, but this album is an impressively diverse set of dancefloor industrial. Rotersand combines all sorts of influences - trance, techno (both old school and new school), futurepop, and even a bit of Pink Floyd. The production isn't earth-shattering, but it does the job nicely. There's the requisite stompers, like "The Last Ship Pt. 1" and "Storm," but there's also the pretty, Pet Shop Boys-esque "Angels Falling" and the impossibly funky "Would You Buy This?" The answer is yes.

Better live,

This album is pretty good, but it's nothing compared to seeing them live. I went to see Covenant in NY, and Rotersand was the opening band. I was blown away by their energy. The guy's got a commanding stage presence, too - he's got to be at least 6'6". They only played like 5 songs, though. Imperative Reaction got a much longer set, and it was a real buzzkill. I enjoyed Rotersand even more than Covenant. I hope they come to the states again and are allowed to play more songs. The recorded material doesn't do them justice.

3.5 stars in my book,
This review is from: Welcome to Goodbye (Audio CD)
I'm pretty new to Rotersand's music. "Welcome to Goodbye" is my first introduction to the band. Rotersand may not be VNV Nation or Apoptygma Berzerk but I thought "Welcome to Goodbye" was enjoyable. There definitely is a Pink Floyd element in the band's music especially in the vocals but for the most part Rotersand's music is your standard EBM. The production is perfect. It has a good live vibe to it. There are lots of good hooks and good beats. Tracks like "Dare to Live" and "The Last Ship pt. 1" made me want to get up and dance. Unfortunately what plagues this album is repetition but then again repetition often plagues many electronic based music. "Exterminate Annihilate Destroy" gets pretty tiresome after a couple of minutes of listening to the obnoxious synthesized beats. The same can be said about "Almost Wasted" except the beats aren't so obnoxious. "Welcome to Goodbye" is good, not perfect but good. I have definitely heard better EBM cds than Rotersand's recent effort.

Each track is a hit or miss,

I bought this album based on the club hit, "exterminate, annihilate, destroy" and the song "dare to live". Both tracks are awsome in my opinion. The last ship pt1, storm were tracks that stood out to me... but the rest were just generic EBM tracks. Some people love it. Others hate it. I wasn't disappointed with my purchase, but it wasn't anything special either.
Sample this album before you condemn or commend it.

One of Rotersand's Best,

Fantastic album that I never grow tired of listening to.
mmmm, Almost Wasted, By the Waters.... I love the versatility of the artist in that each song doesn't sound exactly like any other.

Rotersand is remarkably deceptive. Superficially industrial-futurepop influenced with an underlying trance groove, the conceptualization of their music and lyrics reflects an extensive depth beyond the first glance. As a post-structural risk theorist, their effort expressed in their album Random is Resistance and the War on Error release are illustrations of great comprehension of the state of difficulty in information theory. Each track resonates Foucault, Serres and other great French Continentalists in its rendition.
Welcome to Goodbye is required listening for any who seek to understand what this group is saying. Hermeunetics. Epistemology. Ontology. Real thoughts expressed in remarkably fresh and modern music. "welcome to a mind that dares to wonder why. Welcome to the world behind your eyes."

The energy and "tightness" of this album are evident from the opening musical phrase. Unlike a majority of other albums from this genere one can listen to the entire album at once, OR, pick one or two songs from the album and be equally satisfied. For me, no one song stands out more than the other!! A sign of a well thought out and produced album. Enjoy.

Get your samples correct,

FYI - the samples in "Extermiante-Annihilate-Destroy" are from DOCTOR WHO not RED DWARF.
In regards to the album; it is a very diverse and unique album that should appeal to "darkwave" fans who can appreciate more than just drum-machines, heavy base, and screaming lyrics. If you're more interested in that type of depressing sound, stick with WUMPSCUT of SUICIDE COMMANDO (Yawn...)

A couple of good tracks but overall somewhat weak,

There are several problems with this album:
1. Rock influence: The title track, "welcome to goodbye", "by the waters" "all in all" and "angels falling" sound somewhat rock-ballad-like; the first is more reminiscent of Pink Floyd than industrial dance. 2. Repetative lyrics: "Dare to Live" "Almost Wasted" "Storm": all try to turn a hook into an entire song. 3. Sound sample abuse: "Exterminate, Annihilate, Destroy"(I love red dwarf, but c'mon), "Would you buy this" - the integration of the samples into the rest is very hacked, and again there are repetition issues. The good news: "The Last Ship, Pt 1" and "The Last Ship, Pt 2" are the clear standouts from this album, very polished. "Undone" is also a solid track as is "Alive" which has some repetition issues but is damn catchy all the same. All in all, a rather mediocre release that wasn't really worth the money with a few decent highlights. |
