Book Description

August 14, 2012 1933909218 978-1933909219 1
"Welcome to Hell," the drill instructor announced to the small crowd of young men staring at him apprehensively, his words charging the atmosphere with a foreboding intensity. Three and one half months of hellish and seemingly outrageous demands would be made of those who would endure the journey through the fires of boot camp. These young men would find a pride in themselves that would last forever. Those survivors of boot camp training often look back, with a smile and even a laugh, at what they endured from the DI. Patrick Turley, driven to enlist by the events of 9/11, captures these anxious times perfectly in vivid detail establishing an emotional bond with the reader throughout his journey from man to Marine, and John Patrick Shanley said it only as a former Marine and Pulitzer Prize winner could: "It's great to have gone to Marine Corps boot camp. It's terrible to be in Marine Corps boot camp. It's fun to read about Marine Corps boot camp."

Editorial Reviews

Review

To endure boot camp trains you to endure the hell of any battlefield."Welcome to Hell: Three and a Half Months of Marine Corps Boot Camp" as author Patrick Turley shares his own experiences of Boot Camp, enduring the harshest training that the country has to offer, sharing his endeavor and the training that these future soldiers have to pass. Demonstrating it as something harsh but necessary for fighting men, "Welcome to Hell" is a must for military memoir collection, or for anyone who wants a taste of the nightmare of "basic training. --Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, with one minor exception. March 27, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is an outstanding, vivid glimpse into the physical and psychological culture/society of boot camp. My only complaint is that sometimes the manuscript is messy because it was apparently not fully copy edited or proofread. Highly recommended reading for anyone considering signing a legal contract with the armed forces (Note: Within 48 hours of the start of boot camp two recruits in the author's unit drop out because they cannot take it, are arrested, and are sent to prison for violating that contract).

Instead of focusing primarily on quirky or humorous anecdotes (as the book "Basic" does) or only talking about facts and curriculum type issues (as does the very informative text "The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook") this one mainly deals with the graphic details of the agonizing and life-altering experience of one recruit who found the ordeal extremely hellish but ultimately rewarding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book that I couldn't put down! November 30, 2012
By Cory
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
That was a WONDERFUL read! The writing style is incredibly fluid, with just the right amount of engaging speed that makes it slide along comfortably. The layout was clear and concise, and not once did I feel like I had to go back and reread for fear that I missed something. The flashbacks were used to perfection. The author has a literary gift....descriptions weren't overly saturated with adjectives, dialogue was easy to understand, the progression was spot on...I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I could almost FEEL the spittle from the instructors' shouts peppering my face haha.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. I laughed, I cried (i was on an airplane, so I'm blaming the recirculated air of course), I gained a new appreciation for the type of brave men and women our Government has shaped to protect our nation. Seriously, you guys are BADA**! I had NO idea the types of conditions you train in, the insane regiment, the discipline...I'm truly thankful for you and your fellow Marine Corps brothers and the dedication/love that you all share for our great country. It was a fun read that I really got into, and could easily visualize throughout, thanks to the author's writing style.

10/10, and I hope there are more books to come!

Sincerely, Cory

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome To Hell November 10, 2012
By Jeff
Format:Paperback
Patrick Turley does an excellent job of portraying what Marine Corps bootcamp is really like. I went to bootcamp months after Patrick at MCRD San Diego and I had so many flashbacks and memories that I had completely forgotten about come roaring back; even the ones I wish I had forgotten forever. Every Marine has bootcamp stories, but Patrick was able to convey a true and compelling story while making you feel like you were there. You don't have to be a military junkie to enjoy this book either, there's a personal side to this story that relates to all people. I'll read this book numerous times in the future, whenever I'm feeling nastalgic about the Marine Corps. Its a must read!!
