5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book February 16, 2012
By Tom
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Welcome Home by Dr. Tiner is a well-written novel with a little of everything; Perseverance, Hope, Sadness, and Joy. When Jake attains his dream, this old guy shed a tear or two. His adventures during his search for his envisioned home and owner are at times humorous, and at times a little sad. One of the heroes of this novel just happens to be a lady veterinarian who is both knowledgable and compassionate, as I believe the author must be.
I would recommend this book for any age. I will loan it to the local library and then save it for my youngest grandson to read when he is able to do so.
Dr. Tiner has produced an excellent first novel and I look forward to her next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet book for ALL pet lovers! January 13, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
First off, I *might* be biased in this review because Dr. Billi Tiner was my next-door neighbor for about two years. She was and is an excellent veterinarian who has an incredible way with animals. So, I wasn't surprised to learn that she wrote a book about a special dog named Jake.

The story is about Jake, who leaves his mama dog and litter mates on an adventure to find his dream owner. His litter mates are adopted by what seems to be wonderful and loving families, but that's not what happens to our Jake. Poor Jake is taken by a cruel, cruel man who wants to train Jake to fight other dogs. This beast tries to train our Jake to be a monster but Jake is just too gentle and allows himself to be tortured. OK, yes, I cried at this part - no animal should be treated like that. I wanted to take that guy and beat HIM with a stick the way he was beating Jake. Poor Jake is so unhappy and spends his first three years at the hands of this monster.

Finally, though, the tide turns for our Jake and he finds himself free - then the real adventure begins. There are bumps (some are pretty rough) along the way and some wonderful times for Jake as he searches for the owner of his dreams. He spends time with Mary, a woman who lives on the street and teaches Jake that love DOES exist. If not for Mary, our Jake probably would have given up on his search but once he knows that love does exist, he continues his search.

There are some parts of this book that would be very hard for a young reader; thankfully, the issue of abuse isn't long and drawn out, which I appreciated. The dog fight would be hard for a young reader, too. Yes, these are facts of life for animals on the street. Just as the dog catcher is a fact of life, and so is the animal pound.

What I liked and disliked about it:

I thought the story was really good. I liked that at the end Jake finally found the man in his dreams because I like happy endings in books. I liked that there were kittens in the story because I like kittens. I wish I was the man in Jake's dream so that he would come looking for me and he would come live with me.

I was worried when bad things happened to Jake but it was still ok to read because I knew things were going to get better.

My bottom line:

I love love loved this book and I think kids 7 and older would like this book!!

What I liked and disliked about it:

This story is narrated through Jake's eyes and it reminded me of some classic films where the main character is a dog, such as Big Red and Old Yeller. The closest comparison would truly be the Incredible Journey - a book I loved, loved, loved when I was my daughter's age. We all fell in love with Jake and it is so fitting that he was a black Labrador Retriever mix because we have friends with this kind of dog and he is just a big marshmallow - just like Jake! There is a gentleness and sweetness that comes across in the story that just melted our hearts.

Overall, the plot itself is incredibly moving and engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story for animal lovers April 22, 2013
By S. B.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
"Welcome Home" is the sweet story of Jake, a black lab who begins life in a terrible way and decides to run away. This is the tale of his journey to the man whose voice he has heard over and over in his dreams. Along the way, Jake has many adventures and is joined by other dog friends, and even a cat! This book isn't rocket science, but it's sweet and heart-warming and I enjoyed it. I think it would be ideal for an elementary or middle school-age child who loves animals. It would make a great read-aloud to your kids as well. Billi Tiner is a vet, which adds to the book's appeal, to me at least.
