Book Description

December 1, 2007
In Welcome to the Nerdfarm!: A Doonesbury Book life comes full circle as another Doonesbury Gen Nexer heads for college. With Zipper way-too-deeply embedded at Walden ("America's number-one safety school") Alex boldly opts for MIT, "the nerdfarm," where 30-hour study binges are de rigueur. Daily 911 calls home and a sense of doom ("Just get some duct tape, roll me up in my bedspread, and ship me home . . .") give way as Gal Doonesbury finds fellowship among the similarly exhausted: "No nerd left behind," explains roomie Drew, as they co-brainstorm their way through finals.

The indomitable Granny D struggles with a life change as well; the move from sunny Oklahoma to live with Mike and Kim in saturated, caffeinated Seattle leaves her distinctly unbuzzed. Then there's the on-air unraveling of Mark and Chase's marriage ("I'm tired of living with a Nazi!"), with Joanie handling the technicalities of dissolving a legally nonexistent union. Equally traumatic is Uncle Duke's change of status, emerging from a months-long stupor to find himself pulling down six figures as a K Street lobbyist—and reregistering as a Democrat.

Also shifting kin groups is B.D., who reluctantly joins PTSD group therapy, where Dex, Kurt, and Jason call him on much-needed 'tude adjustments. But there are signs of improvement: "I didn't explode!" he exults, after finding Zipper living in his office. That homeless yet ebulliently overoptimistic undergrad is deeply smitten with Alex, but is dangerously far ahead of her—picking out their future tabloid nickname before she even knows they're an item. Understandably, her considerable attention is focused elsewhere—on surviving MIT's killer grind and on the Battle of the Bots, a high-tech smackdown where she unleashes Alfie, an impudent, high-end hoverbot. Los Angeles Times 'Trudeau is a great comic writer whose devotion to politics and capacity for moral outrage are apparently undiminished after 37 years.' 1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition UNREADABLE!, October 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In Kindle editions of previous volumes, like Duke 2000, you could enlarge it so that one strip at a time could be on the screen. In this one, the published hardlinked 3 strips at a time, so there is NO way to enlarge it. You're looking at 3 strips, super-small, unreadable.

More comic strips should be out for Kindle!

3.0 out of 5 stars You gotta wonder if Trudeau is getting tired of the strip., April 7, 2010
This review is from: Welcome to the Nerd Farm! A Doonesbury Book (Paperback)

This Doonesbury Book is a collection from the "strips" of 2006.It almost seems that Trudeau is just trying to meet his commitments to his loyal fans.It deals with several of the things that have been and continue to go on.There is very little in the way of new situations,or characters. All the characters are ageing and when you really get down to it there is little in the way of humor or the great satire we loved in the strip.
A while back,Trudeau took an extended vacation and the strip has been somewhat lackluster ever since. He seems to be tired of the war scene, and is satisfied with commenting on things like battle scars and physocoligical problems.America has been very turbulent since the election in 2008; and Trudeau doesn't even seem to want to deal with it;other than a few passing comments. All the familiar characters like Duke,Lacy,Joanie, Redfern,Zonker,BD,and on and on are just getting rehashed, but with less vigor and imagination.Somehow ,I get the sense that Trudeau has turned the strip over to underlings to "keep it going",but they don't know what to do with it.The strip was always coming up with new and imaginative artwork and inovations;but there hasn't been much in that department either.
It's no secret that the strip has always leaned to the left;but that didn't stop Trudeau from coming up with great satire during Carter's and Clinton's presidencies;but it seems that Obama and those around him have given Trudeau something he just is unable or maybe uninterested in dealing with.
Nonetheless;a lot of us have been longtime fans of the strip, and keep hoping for something to happen that will put the old life back into the strip. When we see that a good Icon for Obama appears and people like Pelosi,Franks,Axelrod,Rev.Wright,Ayres,Franken, take their place in today's political satire;we'll know Trudeau hasn't lost interest.Lord knows there is plenty to work with.
