More About the Author

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City. My husband, Steve, and I met at the University of Oklahoma. We married in 1978, at the end of our senior year at OU when we each completed our degrees, mine in interior design and his in zoology. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Zoology at Arizona State University. His career has taken us to Tempe, AZ, Tulsa, OK, and most recently to Sherman, TX, where he is currently chair of the Biology Department. Luckily, I can make quilts anywhere!

Our boys, Chris and Jeff, were born while Steve was in graduate school. I discovered quilting when the boys were young and needed comforters for their bunk beds. I have not put my needle down since!

I met Linda Jenkins, my partner in Piece O' Cake Designs, not long after I started quilting at a meeting of the Green Country Quilters' Guild in Tulsa. We've been friends ever since. We started Piece O' Cake in 1994. I could not ask for a better partner.

Making quilts is interesting, fulfilling, and challenging. Running the business with Linda is exhilarating. Although not what I thought I would be doing with my life when I graduated from college, this is so much better!

Our son, Chris, married Lorna in 2001. They presented us with our first grandchild, Elanor Cecelia, November 6, 2002 and John Patrick Kelly "Jack" Goldsmith was born October 24, 2007. Being a "Nana" is truly wonderful.

Jeff married Celia in the summer of 2009. I am blessed - I have two daughter-in-laws that I both love and respect. Life it good!

As a beginning applique quilter with intermediate sewing skills, getting this book is like being a kid in a candy store! I don't know which little house to make first!

Much of the applique is very teeny-tiny (e.g. the reindeer antlers, window panes). However, the book gives tips on simplifying these hard parts (e.g. using twigs or ultrasuede for the reindeer antlers). Actually, the applique is easier than it looks, and the results are GREAT! It really isn't that much harder to 'cut as you go' (for the thin spirals). I'm learning a lot of applique techniques by working on this quilt.

The book itself is simply a black and white compilation of the patterns needed to complete the quilt on the front cover.

I saw this quilt completely finished at a quilt show and it is absolutely breath-taking. I spent half an hour just standing there and looking at all the detail of the quilt. It snagged each person who walked by and got a lot of attention! If you are looking for a project that will be greatly admired, this certainly is worth tackling.

I never thought I would try applique, but this book, with it's clear instruction and beautiful patterns inspired me to try. I just completed my first project. I love the photos they give of completely finished blocks, with ideas for embellishment. Truly inspiring. I am hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars so cute!, August 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Welcome to the North Pole: Santa's Village in Applique (Paperback)
This is a beautiful book! The applique is so charming. I can't wait to make this quilt for myself! The only downside is that you need so many different fabrics to make this quilt as effective as theirs - oh well, more fabric shopping! This was the first Piece O'Cake book I ever bought, after trying one of their block of the month patterns and I have loved it so much that I've bought all their books since. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to hand applique and even to maching appliquers.
