Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A reliable and knowledgeable guide to the uncertain transition from classroom to office, Kravetz’s book is an excellent resource for graduating students. It covers basics like filing tax returns, writing a winning resume, finding the cheapest deal on a new car, living with roommates and making a budget. But the book also comforts readers by providing a multitude of sidebar quotations from men and women in their 20s. Kravetz’s warm prose presents her not only as an instructor to life’s practicalities but also as an older, compassionate friend; her book reassures readers that they are smart and capable—and embarking on a path that many others have already survived.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good advice for those who want to spend some time looking for it., June 11, 2008
This review is from: Welcome to the Real World: You Got an Education, Now Get a Life!, Revised and Updated Edition (Paperback)
First, the title does a disservice to the book as it specifies that the information is for college graduates. It is also information for a group that encompasses not only college graduates but also a large number of 20 and 30-somethings who have graduated from the school of life to adulthood who also have good paying jobs and are ready to accept more responsibility. Second, while the book is chock full of very good advice on many aspects of life for those with promising futures, that is also a problem. It is written in the familiar style of a lot of self help books - very wordy - that will be read by a small number of people, i.e. the very organized and motivated Type A-ers willing to invest the time to plow through it. And maybe that's okay. Maybe the author is satisfied with this small niche group and realizes the book is not for everyone. It is definitely not for the younger kids moving out, those in a panic because they have $20 left for food for the week or need to swipe some sugar packets on the next trip out for fast food. Those kids would be better served by 50 Ways to Leave Your Motherwith its basic advice on leaving home and surviving it all, written in an easy to read style meant to appeal to the unprepared and somewhat clueless who have just recently left the nest.

If you are willing to invest time and concentration on some valuable life lessons then Welcome to the Real World will work for you.
