This review is from: Welcome To Hamilton Camp (MP3 Download)
Hamilton Camp had once made up one half of Gibson & Camp, a legendary folk revival duo whose influences are still being felt in acoustic music today. Camp then turned solo troubadour, then improv actor, and then, briefly, pop singer, with the minor hit "Here's to You" and assorted appearances on musical variety TV shows. The pop reinvention didn't really take, and shortly thereafter Camp returned to his folkie roots, recording his third solo album, "Welcome to Hamilton Camp." In some ways, this installment is a reboot of his first album "Paths of Victory," but instead of interpreting much of Dylan's early songbook, "Welcome" samples entries from an assortment of fellow folk revivalists (Patrick Sky, Peter LaFarge), obscure songwriters (Peter Boyd, Bob Neuwirth), and bona fide pop-folk stars (Dylan, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen), as well as four original tunes. It's all guitars, harmonicas, and multi-tracked harmonies, and much of it -- "April Come She Will," "Nectar of God," "So Much Comfort", "America" -- is quite intelligently and competently done. Still, much of it sounds dated, and except for "Honey Wine," which is one of Camp's best songs ever, the other originals are pretty much clinkers. Mainly for Camp aficionados, but it still occasionally touches folks outside of his immediate orbit.
