Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up?A collection of 20 poems that reflect the intermingled joy and pain of childbirth and babies. The poets, both well known and obscure, represent cultures from around the world, and include Erica Jong and Sylvia Plath from the U.S., Su Shih from China, and Bibhu Padhi from India. Subjects range from conception and birth to midnight feedings and the wishes a parent bestows on her child. Each verse is paired with an exquisite, full-page, black-and-white photograph. For example, a picture of an Asian doctor cradling a baby is paired with a poem on the birthing process by a Southeast Asian woman. Although this book is extremely well done, it is difficult to imagine its place in a children's collection. The content of most of the poems is more suitable for adults, as are some of the pictures. Most express a parent's point of view.?Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, IL

Review

"This book would make a cherished gift to a pregnant mom or expecting couple, but even if you have no children of your own, you can truly appreciate the awe and wonder contained in the pages of this very special collection of words and images, all centered around the smallest of babies and how they evoke the biggest of emotions." --Curled Up Kids --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Welcome to the World: A Celebration of Birth and Babies from Many Cultures (Hardcover)
This book bursts with the images and feelings that parents feel towards thier new babies. I was instantly captured by the beautiful photos of babies and the touching poems that were written by women from around the world. As I read I felt that this book perfectly described all the emotions and love I first felt when I became a Mother. A BEAUTIFUL BOOK and a must for ALL parents.
