3.0 out of 5 stars Full of stereotypes but positive tone
The use of gender stereotypes is overdone in this book. A few would be tolerable, but the gender-typed roles make up the bulk of this book (e.g., mom is the one to give baby a bath, the big sister loves pink, the sisters will play beauty parlor, dress up, tea party. etc.). Normally I'm not overly concerned with such gender-typing, but it is done to the point of being...

This picture book is full of sweet sentiment and darling illustrations. It isn't a story so much as a promise of things to come between sisters. The excitement of having a new baby in the house is a big deal to older siblings, and this shines through.

As a read-aloud book, however, it is difficult to get into a decent rhythm. The prose is laid out to look as though it is rhythmic, so, while reading to my own daughter, I kept feeling off kilter. This may seem like a nitpicky thing to say, but try reading it aloud, and the difficulty will make sense. Brooke Shields is, without a doubt, an intelligent and soulful person, but that doesn't always translate into a gift for writing. The big sister's lines are full of heart but awkwardly written. Sometimes it rhymes, then it doesn't. This contributes to the stumbling I feel when I read this one aloud.

Awkward rhythm aside, this is a sweet book that would be nice for girls who are soon-to-be big sisters (or who already are!).

Note: My daughter became a big sister to a little brother last fall, but she still found this book delightful and relevant. But don't ask her what "relevant" means. ;-)

I love the positive tone of this book. Cori Doerrfeld's illustrations are so colorful and full of special little details - I'm sure kids will find new things to fixate on with each reading of this sweet story. A great sister book.

This book is a very delightful story that has fantastic illustrations! The drawings are so colorful and the storyline is great for children and babies! I would highly recommend this book for anyone with children and even those without- it is simply a very sweet book. Both the illustrator and author did a great job with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, sweet story, January 6, 2012
We received this book as a gift when my second daughter was born. That was a year ago and we still read this book frequently. It's a fun, sweet story and makes a great gift for a big sister when a new baby girl arrives. I am purchasing two copies for two different friends that are about to have a second baby girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Welcome to Your World, Baby (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Essentially it describes all the fun things Big Sister has planned for the new addition to the family. That premise might seem like that this book is narrowly targeted for a particular audience, but our 2 and a half year-old son (who is NOT expecting a sibling any time soon) absolutely loves this book. He wants to read it for nighttime reading almost every day. And just the other day, he wanted to catch snowflakes on his tongue, just like the sisters in the book.

What really brings the book together are the illustrations. The fun the sisters are having is perfectly captured on each page.

I bought this book for my 2 girls, 4 and 7, who are also about to have a new sister join them in a few months. My four-yr old just loves this book! It highlights all of the best things about being an older and younger sister- in a very sweet and simple way.

I love these illustrations--they're fresh, colorful and sweet, without being too, well, sweet. This book is a great addition to a family who is adding on!

3.0 out of 5 stars Full of stereotypes but positive tone, December 14, 2010
The use of gender stereotypes is overdone in this book. A few would be tolerable, but the gender-typed roles make up the bulk of this book (e.g., mom is the one to give baby a bath, the big sister loves pink, the sisters will play beauty parlor, dress up, tea party. etc.). Normally I'm not overly concerned with such gender-typing, but it is done to the point of being trite here. The book is, however, very positive and happy, which should help excite an older sibling. My 3 year old enjoyed it initially but bored of it quickly.
