Title Misleading,
This review is from: Welding Basics (Paperback)
Although the title indicates that the book describes welding basics, the book doesn't describe the basic techniques used to weld. Lots of pictures but no practical steps on how to weld. If you've never welded before, don't expect this book to teach you.

Good Colorful Pictures, But More Theory Needs To Be Explained,
By Konan (CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Welding Basics (Paperback)
Good colorful pictures to start off with. This book mostly explains about welding projects such as making a welding table and ornamental accents. Good book to buy for the first timer interested in welding. For the advanced I would skip on to another publisher.

This book if filled with the basics of welding on a practical level. Things like: what your need, procedures, how to weld, and projects. The lavish photos and illustrations make welding much easier by comparing your weld with the book. I learned everything I know from this book, and when I welded my first time I failed....but now I'm much better. Practice makes perfect. Overall, a great book for the price!

Little SMAW Coverage,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Welding Basics (Paperback)
My weld process of choice is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Unfortunately, there is not nearly enough detail in this book to make it even marginally useful to SMAW welders. MIG, TIG, and Oxy/Acetylene are covered to far greater depth.
Since it was my own expectations that were not met, I went with a relatively neutral 3-star rating. This book might be just fine if your process is other than SMAW.

Welding Basics,

This review is from: Welding Basics (Paperback)
This book covers the very low level basics and should be used by people who can not tell the difference between a straight blade screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver.
The book even walks you through plugging the machine in....if someone needs this kind of help they may want to go to a public library or even better.... Everything that is in the book is available free on the internet. I would pass on this if I were a person needing practical welding help....and use the saved money on better welding consumables.

Excellent for beginners - photos alone are worth the price!,

The author tells you upfront that he assumes you already know welding and that this book is a refresher for those that have not done welding in some time. The photos alone are worth the cost - they are superb - the list of projects is excellent as well. This would not be the only book I'd own on welding but it sure would be one of them because a picture is worth a thousand words!

I thought this book was worth reading. Yes, I've read the other reviews that said it was too simplified and for idiots but for someone who has never welded, or like me has not welded since high school, it covers the basics. It gives a good comparison of different technologies (Oxy, SMAW, MIG, TIG and plasma) the pros/cons of each. No, this book will not teach you how to weld like a pro but it is a good starting point if you want to learn about the various technologies or trying to decide what type of welder you want or need to get started. The Welder's Handbook (Finch) is also a good beginner's guide.

I found this book to have strong basic/beginner information as advertised. Some foggy areas are clearer to me now. The section on welding projects could have been left out and additional instructional materials provided.

Good for Beginners,

Decent book if you have little or no knowledge of welding. A little too basic if you already know how to weld and are looking to learn more.
