Editorial Reviews

From Book News

With the exception of torch manipulation instructions (best presented in a classroom setting, it is argued), the authors attempt to present all the technical and safety information necessary for beginner welder needs. Many black and white illustrations accompany the discussion of equipment, metallurgic processes, soldering and brazing techniques, and weld inspection issues.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap

Finallya guide that makes welding easy for beginners and is a handy reference for professionals! As a concise yet thorough introduction to the topic, Welding Essentials is designed for educators, engineers, contractors, fabricators, hobbyists, students and beginning weldors. Its unique, comprehensive question-and-answer format will allow readers to quickly find what they are looking for and fully understand it

Eliminating non-essential items to prevent overloading the reader, Welding Essentials addresses safety hazards and required precautions in detail and provides solutions to common problems for each process. Currently, for liability reasons many U.S. companies have one or two-day seminars for floor-level workers covering welding processes and safety. With this in mind Welding Essentials can be used in conjunction with these seminars, and as a result will be a tremendous asset to companies needing to log and claim that they put printed safety materials into employees hands.

Additionally, Welding Essentials discusses the difference between constant voltage and constant current power supplies and traces the development of welding power supplies from motor-generator sets to transformers to the inverters of today. It also carefully explains step-by-step setup and shutdown procedures, along with why equipment grounding and GFIs are needed and the way in which they work. In fact, no other welding text covers electrical safety as thoroughly as Welding Essentials.

Whats more, a metallurgy chapter explains how welding heat affects metals properties and how to minimize its negative effects and provides a clear explanation of hardening, tempering and heat treating steel. As a valuable guide for beginning welders it presents essential material in small, easy-to-read and understand units and introduces them to weld inspection, welding symbols and qualification and certification issues. Welding Essentials uses more than 300 illustrations to clarify and explain every subject and includes a comprehensive glossary in English and Spanish. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Engineer's Review, October 28, 2001
By A Customer
The book is very will written and illlustrated. The capter on metallurgy is excellent; direct and clear with no unneccesary techno-babble. The expanded chapter contains wonderful tips on fabrication and repair. I have been in the metals industry for twenty-nine years, and this is the best welding manual I have come across. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran, I think you will agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welding Essentials, February 13, 2001
By
Paul Symoens (Orange County, CA USA) - See all my reviews
If you really want to learn how to weld and not just shoot sparks around the room to impress your friends, get this book. Welding is not simple as it might seem. To choose the correct process, weld safely and KNOW what you're doing is not easy. Where Galvery and Marlow make this book a winner is in the title. They bring the welding essentials into a reader friendly format. The explainations are concise and clear. The illustrations compliment the text. Stuck in an overcomplicated textbook? Help is here. This one is a keeper. Glad I bought it.

Having done very little welding in the past, I needed a book to help me get started. Welding Essentials fit this requirement to the letter. It is written in a clear and consise manner with lots of helpful illustrations. I would recommend this book to anyone - beginner, or an old pro who needs a refresher.
