In the late 1880s, Weldon & Co., a pattern-making firm in London, began publishing a series of 14-page newsletters with instructions and patterns for needlework projects. Each newsletter covered a specific needlework technique, including knitting, crochet, patchwork, tatting, crazy quilting, and other crafts especially popular at the time, such as Mountmellick embroidery and netting. This set a facsimile edition now in five volumes gathers together hundreds of patterns, many illustrated with engravings. Today's needleworker will marvel at patterns written at a time when "patterns" (for such items as knitted wigs, a pen wiper in the shape of a Turkish fez, and netted ear caps for horses) were more suggestions than the step-by-step instructions we are accustomed to today. This, the fifth volume of a planned 12-volume set, is a treasure trove for needlework designers and students of historical needlework.
