5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful stuff!, November 30, 1999
This review is from: Welela (Audio CD)
This is my favorite Miriam Makeba CD. It has a jazzy sound and is very upbeat. Miriam was my introduction into African Pop and I am so excited that I discovered it! African music is my favorite music and this CD is one that is near the top of my list! I've recommended this to people and everyone that has purchased it, loves it!

Joyous and thought-provoking. From the first track to the last, it makes you want to dance. I am just beginning to discover the music of Africa - and what a delight this album is!

Known as the Queen of African music- this album is spell-binding and includes tunes Makeba sings in tribute to countries such as her homeland South Africa (which was in turmoil during the production of this album), Mozambique and Guinea.

A political histoy, a story and altogether compelling listening. Give it a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makeba sings José Carlos Schwarz, June 4, 2003
This review is from: Welela (Audio CD)
Welela is my favorite Makeba CD. A bit on the upbeat, dancable side, her voice smoother than ever. In addition, on Welela, Makeba sings two songs by the late composer and Minister of Culture in Guinea-Bissau, José Carlos Schwarz (Dju di Galinha, and A luta continua). Makebas voice suits them well, and is a great inroduction to his music. Listen also to the Capeverdean Terezinha Araujo's incredibly beautiful interpretation of his "Apili" on the Simentera CD "Raiz"

This is my favorite Miriam Makeba. Though it doesn't have the best version of Pata Pata, this cd is smooth from beginning to end and encapsulates political passion.

This is one of the all time great African pop recordings. Unfortunately the CD sound is not nearly as good as that of the LP. I hope they remaster this recording.
