Editorial Reviews

We all know Kevin 'Shinyribs' Russell is a loose cannon. How else to explain covers of R. Kelly's Feelin' on Yo Booty, and Elvis Costello's Indoor Fireworks in the same night. Most folks who follow such things consider his outfit, The Gourds, one of the best live bands in the land, in large part because of Russell's brazen eccentricites and creative syntax. However, the most overlooked thing about Russell is that when he plays it straight - as he does for most of his new Shinyribs record Well After Awhile - the man can produce some of the funkiest and most beautiful roots music on the planet. It's not to say the ''psycholiteranaut w/8 AA batteries-tweed facade-equal parts Waylon Jennings, Robert Rauschenberg and Harvey Korman'' (to quote his Twitter feed) doesn't dig into his bag of twistedness here. But a listen to the straight-up duet Shores Of Gallilee (with Sally Allen), the sweet quasi-fable Who Built The Moon, or the intimate cover of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come that closes the record, shows that even when Russell puts aside some of the tricks, he delivers grade-A Country Soul.

I was introduced to Shinyribs when a local Austin radio station played Poor People's Store over the air. It cracked me up and got stuck in my head so that I was humming it days later. Eventually I was listening to Old Mad Joy, got hit by an obvious stick, and realized singer for The Gourds and Shinyribs were the same person. Then, a couple of weeks ago, the missus and I were chowing on tacos and beer at El Arroyo (just like in the Pat Green song) and heard some great sounding music coming out of the Mean Eyed Cat bar across the street. It was a wonderful show. Russell's voice and charisma grabs the crowd and insists they have fun. And we did.
The record itself is more serious than I expected it to be. It doesn't have the hilarious Feelin' On Your Booty cover (for licensing reasons I'm sure), but the tracks are solid soulful country blues. It is like the class clown took the teacher's advice and applied himself making a truly great record.

I have been spinning this album for months. Almost daily. It's among the few albums that have been released in the last couple of decades that doesn't include a single dud. Although it's a cross-genre list, I'd include it with Spoon's "Gimme Fiction," Ween's "Pure Guava," Simon and Garfunkel's "Bride Over Troubled Water," Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger," and Queen's "Night at the Opera" as an album perfectly crafted.

Add to that the entertaining nature of the music and lyrics, and you have an unbeatable formula for fun. Pure genius, Kev. Good stuff. Thanks.

If you ever get a chance to see Kevin Russell live on stage (he's "Shinyribs") DO IT! We're lucky we live in Austin, where he's from. But I think he travels everywhere, so check his touring schedule. What a talent!

Have enjoyed many hours of listening to this cd. Heard "who built the moon" and had to have it. The song on the cd is not the one on youtube. The cd doesn't have the background music, but still a powerful song.

My wife and me are big fans of Uncle Lucius and on the advice of a friend in Austin he told us to listen too Shinyribs. I thought he was pulling my leg but honest to God the music is heaven sent. I can't tell you how much we have enjoyed all the cuts. Who built the Moon may be my favorite. I have not smiled so much over a album in 45 years. And sing along, I must look like a fool in the truck but I am having so much fun I don't give a rat's a**. Get this music and all the rest of Kevin's music. Not a bad one in the bunch. And as a bonus cut a CD with Uncle Lucius and Shinyribs every other cut and enjoy some of the best sound around.

Received this album for free while delivering a pizza one night. Thought I'd give it a listen and was completely blown away...absolutely cannot stop listening to it! Hope to see them live next chance I get as I've only heard they are even better live!

Bought this three years ago for "East TX Rust," and could not stop playing it. I don't usually write reviews, but after realizing that it's been 3 years and I still play it every week, I felt like it was time to give "Well After Awhile," a few stars. There's not a bad track on the album, and it covers a lot of musical and emotional ground. I smile, laugh, and sing along every time I play it. (If You Need The) 442 is the song I keep coming back too, but they are all good. Tell your friends, and see these guys live if you can, they are amazing.
