I have been spinning this album for months. Almost daily. It's among the few albums that have been released in the last couple of decades that doesn't include a single dud. Although it's a cross-genre list, I'd include it with Spoon's "Gimme Fiction," Ween's "Pure Guava," Simon and Garfunkel's "Bride Over Troubled Water," Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger," and Queen's "Night at the Opera" as an album perfectly crafted.

Add to that the entertaining nature of the music and lyrics, and you have an unbeatable formula for fun. Pure genius, Kev. Good stuff. Thanks.

My husband is a HUGE Shinyribs fan aned he was not diappointed in this new CD.

I have had this album for a couple of weeks and can't believe how good it is. I had heard a few songs on Sirius' Outlaw Country and decided to purchase it. It is rare that I find an album these days where all of the songs are good. Of all the new albums I have heard this year, this was by far the best.

Boys and Girls do yourself a favor, jump on the Shinyribs bandwagon. K.R. is a prolific poet, whos words and music will intrigue, entertain, and educate. Enjoy, you are welcome!

well....I caught the Gourds live this summer, and am addicted to these guys. bought the Shinyribs CD, and am playing it 2 or 3 times a day. I think he is such a good singer, and all the songs really hit the spot. one of my favorite CD's I totally recommend this to anyone who is considering buying this. good BBQ music.

Kevin "Shinyribs" Russell has taken a break from his front-line duties with the Gourds to record his second solo album. The voice and obtuse lyrics will be familiar to fans, but the sound isn't as driving or rough as the Gourds' records, sitting instead in a deep country-soul groove that sports unusual production touches around the edges. The second-line rhythms that pop-up with the Gourds are still here, but relaxed from a march to a stroll, and electric piano is dominant on many tracks. Russell sings with the sort of choked vocals made famous by Boz Scaggs, and though this music is lighter with its blues, the vibe may remind you (those few of you who are remindable) of `70s concert stalwarts the Climax Blues Band.

The album opens with a lunar creation myth that manages to evoke both ancient times and space-age travel, and "Country Cool" essays Russell's easy-going, unpretentious tastes. There's a fever to "(If You Need the) 442," though it's not exactly clear what the testimony is about, and the unusual selection of goods at the "Poor People's Store" will be familiar to those who know their city's thrift store treasures. The band turns funky for "East TX Rust," bringing to mind Dr. John's Gumbo and Swamp Dogg's Cuffed, Collared and Tagged. It's a shame Russell didn't cover "Sam Stone," though he does close with a wailing solo version Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come," and it's a treat to finally hear him sing a straightforward lyric.
